Charles Harrison CROSS, late of Montpelier [Vermont], baker and confectioner, was born 12 February 1812 in Sanbornton [Belknap County], New Hampshire, and died 12 September 1905 in Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont]. Educated in the public schools. Mr. CROSS was the pioneer baker of Vermont, learning the baker's trade with his brother, Timothy CROSS, in New Hampshire, and locating in Montpelier in 1828, where he conducted business alone for twenty years, and for nearly fifty years with his son, L. Biography of George Henry CROSS - p 158 (son of Charles Harrison) George Henry CROSS, St. Johnsbury [Caledonia County, Vermont], baker and confectioner, was born 06 February 1836 at Concord [Merrimack County], New Hampshire, son of Charles Harrison and Caroline (HOUSTON) CROSS. Educated at Washington County Grammar School, Montpelier. After leaving school entered his father's employ as an apprentice in the bakery and confectionery business. In 1860 went to Fort Covington [Franklin County], New York, where he engaged in business for himself; later came to St. Johnsbury, and in May 1867 purchased the bakery of William P. FAIRBANKS, where he has built up a most successful business. Republican. Member and deacon of the North Congregational Church. Director in Merchants National Bank, St. Johnsbury. In 1862 he [George Henry CROSS] [Miss?] Ellen MATTHEWS of Fort Covington [Franklin County], New York; they had three children: (1) Charles, deceased; (2) Harry Matthews, deceased; and (3) Jennie Pathenia [Parthenia?], wife of Dr. J. F. TRULL, Biddeford [York County], Maine. Biography of Lewis Bartlett CROSS - p 159 (son of Charles Harrison) Lewis Bartlett CROSS, Montpelier, retired baker and confectioner, was born 09 August 1839 in Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], son of Charles Harrison and Caroline Webster (HOUSTON) CROSS. Educated in the public schools, and Fort Edward and Newbury Seminaries. In 1858 entered his father's bakery as an apprentice, serving three years; was the second man in Montpelier to be enrolled for service in the Civil War, but owing to illness was not mustered in; later was appointed sutler of Third Vermont Regiment, serving one year; in 1863 engaged in business with his father under the firm name of C. H. Cross & Son, continuing until 1898, when his father retired from the firm; in 1908 sold the business to F. A. HAYDEN and G. L. EDSON. Republican; has held many town, village and city offices; represented Montpelier in the Legislature 1890, serving on ways and means and bank committees; delegate Republican national convention 1880; National Republican League convention 1889 and 1906; presidential elector and vote-bearer 1896-1897; for twenty-four years member first congressional district committee; and has attended every Republican state convention since 1864. Is trustee and vice president Montpelier Savings Bank and Trust Company; president and trustee Wood Art Gallery; president board of commissioners Green Mountain Cemetery. In 1862 he [Lewis Bartlett CROSS] married [Miss?] Lucia A. CHAPLIN, of Wells River [Orange County, Vermont], who died in 1903; they had two children: (1) Carrie, and (2) Charles H. [Charles Herbert CROSS, whose biography follows]. Biography of Charles Herbert CROSS - p 158 (son of Lewis Bartlett) Charles Herbert CROSS, Boston [Suffolk County], Massachusetts, shoe manufacturer, was born 30 August 1867 in Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], son of L. Bart and Lucia Ann (CHAPLIN) CROSS. Educated at Montpelier schools and Bryant & Stratton's Commercial School, Boston. Connected with Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company, for seven years; associated with E. J. BLISS of Boston, engaged in the manufacture of shoes under firm name of The Regal Shoe Company, continuing one year, when L. C. BLISS, father of E. J. BLISS, was admitted to partnership in the business; since which time have been entire owners of the business. Was for twelve years member of the First Corps of Boston Cadets. Republican. Member of Masonic Fraternity, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and several clubs.
