Washington COBURN, James Allen Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 76 (portrait p 76) James Allen COBURN, of East Montpelier, was born 06 April 1828 in Montpelier [Washington County], Vermont, son of Larned and Lovisia (ALLEN) COBURN. Educated in the district schools, he remained with his father, who was a lifelong resident and prominent citizen of the town of Montpelier, several years after attaining his majority, and assisted him in the management of his farm and mills. Gifted with a strong talent for mathematics, he taught school successfully for six winters. In 1850 he married and moved to the farm of his father-in-law, which he has since purchased, and here he has always remained. On 04 December 1850 he [James Allen COBURN] married [Miss] Abbie DAGGETT, of East Montpelier, daughter of Arthur and Nancy (FARWELL) DAGGETT, Jr. From their union [the union of James Allen and Abbie (DAGGETT) COBURN] have sprung five children: (1) Larned; (2) Arthur D.; (3) Flora H., Mrs. Henry KELTON; (4) James Lee; and (5) Dwight H., who died in infancy. Judge COBURN has always been active and prominent in the councils of the Republican party in his section. A representative of the Legislature in 1869-1870, he was elected assistant judge in 1878 and 1880. During the war he was an active member of the Union League of East Montpelier.
