Washington CASSIE, George Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 66 George CASSIE, of Barre [Washington County, Vermont], was born 29 May 1857 in Auchmaliddie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, son of James and Margaret (RONALD) CASSIE. His education was limited to the public schools in his native town, and he served his apprenticeship at the trade of a stone cutter. When the regular term of five years had expired, he served as journeyman two years, and in 1880 emigrated to the United States, settling at Barre in 1882. Commencing with a small capital, he had gradually increased his business, until it has proved most lucrative and successful. Two years ago Mr. CASSIE conceived the idea of importing pure-bred Shetland ponies for breeding purposes. This venture has also proved successful. Mr. CASSIE is a Democrat, and is an excellent representative of the Scotch-American, combining American enterprise with the native thrift and shrewdness of the Scotch. On 16 May 1889 he [George CASSIE] married Laura E., daughter of Charles L. and Celinda (DICKEY) CURRIER, of Barre [Washington County, Vermont]. Their first child, Jessie, died in infancy. Their second, Raymond J., was born in October 1891. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
