Andrew Chandler BROWN, late of Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], was born 10 July 1828 in Sutton [Caledonia County, Vermont], son of Rev. Elisha and Phoebe (FLETCHER) BROWN. Andrew Chandler BROWN, who died 29 October 1911, was educated at the public schools, and Methodist Seminary, Newbury [Orange County, Vermont]. Learned the printer's trade while at school and during vacations; at age eighteen began teaching; taught common and select schools sixteen terms; at twenty-three engaged in printing business in Bradford [Orange County, Vermont], later becoming editor and publisher of the "Northern Enquirer." In 1854 he came to Montpelier as foreman of the "Watchman and Journal," and was business manager and editor of same 1857-1862; in 1865 began insurance business in Montpelier; in 1880 opened first telephone exchange, later selling to Bell Telephone Company. In the fall of 1862 he recruited Company I, Thirteenth Regiment Vermont Volunteers, becoming its captain; on organization of regiment elected lieutenant-colonel, resigning after eight months of service to accept office of commissioner on board of enrollment, 1st Congressional District Vermont. In 1851 he [Andrew Chandler BROWN] married [Miss?] Lucia Almira GREEN of Waitsfield [Washington County, Vermont]; they have five children, those living being: (1) Ella (BROWN) BAILEY; (2) Rome Green BROWN, of Minneapolis [Hennepin County], Minnesota; and (3) Joseph Green BROWN, of Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont]. In politics Colonel BROWN was originally an Old Line Whig, later a Republican; was official press reporter, House of Representatives, fifteen consecutive years. Biography of Joseph Green BROWN - p 129 (son of Andrew Chandler BROWN) Joseph Green BROWN, postmaster, Montpelier was born 21 November 1866 in Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], son of Andrew Chandler and Lucia A. (GREEN) BROWN. Educated at Washington County Grammar School. After leaving school entered his father's office and has succeeded him in the insurance business, having had full ownership and control of it since 1889; is also president of the Ryle & McCormick Company, and is treasurer of the U. S. Clothespin Company, Montpelier. Republican; trustee of the village of Montpelier one year; lister 1892-1894; elected mayor of the city 1900, and re-elected 1901. Served on the staff of Governor E. C. SMITH, 1898-1900, with the rank of colonel. In 1889 he [Joseph Green BROWN] married Helen R. WOOLSON, of Montpelier; they have two children, Ruth Lydia and Chandler Woolson. Mr. BROWN was appointed postmaster in 1906, and reappointed 1910. Is a Unitarian. Member of Aurora Lodge No. 22, Free & Accepted Masons; Vermont Lodge Independent Order of Odd Fellows; past exalted ruler Benevolent Protective Order of Elks; president of the Apollo Club; for seven years secretary of the board of trade; and ex-president of Montpelier Country Club. Biography of Rome Green BROWN - p 130 (son of Andrew Chandler BROWN) Rome Green BROWN, lawyer, Minneapolis [Hennepin County], Minnesota, was born 15 June 1862 in Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], son of Andrew Chandler and Lucia A. (GREEN) BROWN. He is a direct descendant of Anthony STODDARD (maternal side) and Chad BROWN (paternal side) who emigrated to Boston from England about 1630. Educated at Montpelier High School; graduated from Harvard University with degree A. B. magna cum laude. Member Phi Beta Kappa, Harvard Chapter. Admitted to Vermont Bar 1887; went to Minneapolis 1887; vice president, director, and attorney Minneapolis Tribune Company; director and attorney St. Anthony Falls Water Power Company, Minneapolis Mill Company, Crookston Water Works, Power & Light Company, and other corporations; law partner of Col. R. C. BENTON, formerly of St. Albans [Franklin County, Vermont], 1887-1895; senior member of firm of Brown & Albert, and Brown, Albert & Guesmer; engaged in general practice with special attention to the law of water rights, casualty liability, insurance, and corporations. Lecturer on water rights in law schools of University of Minnesota and University of North Dakota. In 1888 he [Rome Green BROWN] married [Miss] Mary Lee HOLLISTER of Marshfield [Washington County, Vermont], daughter of Samuel D. and Flora (COBURN) HOLLISTER; they have two children, Edwin Chandler and Dorothy H.
