BISHOP, Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], educator, was born 24 August 1852 in Wrightstown [Burlington County], New Jersey, son of Samuel W. and Elizabeth R. (PATTERSON) BISHOP. Educated at New Egypt Academy [Ocean County, New Jersey], Wesleyan University, class of 1878; degree of D. D. from Mt. Union College 1894, and from Wesleyan University 1910. Was teacher of science and mathematics in Bordentown Female College [Burlington County, New Jersey] 1878-1879; principal of Durham Academy [Middlesex County, Connecticut] 1879-1881; principal of Montpelier Seminary 1881-1893; president of Chamberlain Institute, Randolph [Cattaraugus County], New York, 1893-1902; pastor Methodist Episcopal Church, McKean [McKean County], Pennsylvania 1902-1903; superintendent of Ferris Industrial School, Wilmington [Newcastle County], Delaware 1903-1904; principal of Montpelier Seminary since 1904. In 1878 he [Elwell A. BISHOP] married [Miss?] Clara J. BROWN of Pointville [Burlington County], New Jersey; she died 1908; they had five children: Ethel I.; Clara Evelyn; Helen Saxanna, deceased; Hallie Belle, deceased; and Harold Elwell. Mr. BISHOP is a Republican. President of Vermont State Teachers' Association 1888. Methodist; member of Erie Annual Conference 1900-1904; transferred to Vermont Annual Conference 1904; member of General Conference 1908.
