Douglas M. & William Jr.) William BARCLAY [Sr.], late of Barre [Washington County, Vermont], granite producer, was born 07 December 1850 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, son of Peter and Mary (McDONALD) BARCLAY. Educated in the common parish schools of his native place. Mr. BARCLAY first came to America in 1874, making several trips across to Scotland before locating permanently in Barre in 1886; started in the granite business in 1887, first in the firm of Littlejohn & Barclay, and in 1890 in that of Barlclay Brothers, which firm name has been continued since; was a partner in Barre, Standard, and Sunnyside Granite companies; designed the famous Burns monument at Barre, which was executed by his firm. Mr. BARCLAY was independent in politics; he was elected mayor of Barre for three years, 1904-1907, on citizens ticket. He is a member of the Congregational Church. In 1876 William BARCLAY married Mary MUNRO of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. They had eight children: John C.; William; R. Douglas M.; Mary M.; Annie L.; Flora E. B.; Margaret C. T.; and Grace D. The subject of this sketch was first chieftain Clan Gordon No. 12, Order of Scottish Clans; member of Granite Lodge No 35, Free & Accepted Masons; Granite Chapter No. 26, Royal Arch Masons; St. Aldemar Commandery No. 11, Knights Templar; Mt. In religious belief a Congregationalist. In 1910 he [R. Douglas M. BARCLAY] married [Miss?] Icy Ella MANCHESTER of Randolph [Orange County, Vermont]; they have one daughter, Catherine Marion. In religious belief a Congregationalist. In 1900 William BARCLAY, Jr. married Jessie Anne MERCER of Barre. They have four children: William Reid, Gordon Mercer, Dorothy Alice, and Helen Douglas. Mr. BARCLAY is a member of Clan Gordon No. 12, Order of Scottish Clans; the Burns Club; the Barre Board of Trade; has served as secretary of Granite Quarry Owners' Association, and vice president of Granite Manufacturers' Association; member of National Association of Granite Industries.
