A Brief County History

Essex County is located in the northeastern corner of Vermont, with the counties of Orleans and Caledonia to the west, the New Hampshire counties of Coos and Grafton to the east, and Canada as its northern neighbor.

Essex County was formed in 1798, from a portion of Caledonia County, but it was not fully organized until 1799, at which time Lunenburgh and Brunswick were established as half shires of Essex County.  In 1801, the shire was changed to Guildhall as the county seat. (See Child's Gazetteer of Caledonia and Essex Counties, Vt., 1764-1887, page 13.)

Note: The Town of Essex, VT is located in Chittenden County.
