Thomas May, (b. bef 1767), d. March 1823 Louisa Co,Va. Thomas married Anna Hyate (d. aft 1823 Va).

Children of Thomas & Anna ( Hyate) May:


1) Noel May, b (abt 1792/93) in Orange Co,Va. Died in 1866 after being bicked by a horse. Married Aleavy Eddins in Dec 1817 Madison Co,Va. They had 7 children together. Noel remarried in 1863 to a Sarah C. Collins. They had one child William. Noel was buried on his property which he owned many acres of farmland in The May Grave yard or also known as The Estes Graveyard as Estes later owned the land. This Cemetery is west of Grave Mills, Va, on private property & is a two mile or so walk.

(This is information on Noel May & his family):


Noel May, b. abt 1792/1793 Orange Co,Va. Died in 1866 after being kicked by a horse in Madison Co,Va. HIs parents were Thomas & Anna (Hyate) May. He married Aleavy Eddins Dec 22,1817 in Madison Co,Va. They had 7 children. Noel remarried after Aleavy died. He married Sarah C. Collins in 1863 & they had a child William May together.

Aleavy Eddins, b. abt 1795 Va, died bet 1860-1863 in Madison Co,Va. Daughter of Theophilius Eddins & Dorothy " Dolly" Kirtley.

(Notes on Aleavy's parents:):

Theophilus Eddins, b. 1760/1770 Luneburg Co,Va. He died in 1828. He was the son of Joseph & Sarah (Blakey) Eddins. He married Dorothy Kirtley Oct 8,1793 Madison Co,Va. Dorothy 's parents were Francis & Eliza (Powell) Kirtley. They had 2 known children Aleavy (Eddins) May & Sarah Eddins.

Noel & Aleavy (Eddins) May as well as William May, the son of Noel & Sarah are buried in the old May Graveyard on the Old May property which was later owned as Estes graveyard as Estes owned the proprty. This area is miles to the west of Graves Mill,Virginia in Southwest Madison County near Buzzard Rocks & Schoolhouse hill areas.

Children of Noel & Aleavy May:

1) Thomas May, b. Oct 22,1818 Madison Co,Va. Died June 20,1873 Fulton Co,Il. buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lewistown,Fulton Co,Il. He married Elizabeth Scovel, daughter of Ira & Mary (Chrisley) Scovel, on Feb 18,1844 Fulton Co,Il.

Thomas was a farmer & a road commissioner in Fulton County,Illinois. He was christiened about 1834/35 Methodist Church, Madison Co,Va. In 1842 he bought land in Fulton County, Section 29 of Lewistown Township.

Thomas & Elizabeth had seven children: Mary Susan, Oleva Jane, Margaret A, Amanda Emma, Thomas Allen, James, Sarah A. May.

** Thomas became ill in 1873. A Newspaper item from the Canton Register June 7,1873,Canton,Illinois tells of some gypsies hearing of Thomas'es illness. They went to his home saying they could help him. The May family was induced to try the the remedies. They were given 3 bottles they thought were medicine which turned out to be Sugar of lead, wash in one, sweet oil & a villanous compound of boiled herbs. It was so badly put together that it soured thus Thomas died June 20,1873.

His wife Elizabeth with her son James continued with the farming afterwards. Most of the Mays are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown,Illinois. **

2) James May, b. 1824 Madison Co,Va. He married Ophalia Eddins Apr 22,1845 Madison Co,Va.

3) Levy Ann, b. 1827 Madison Co,Va. Married Simeon Slaughter about 1849.

4) Mary Susan May, b. 1831 Madison Co,Va. Married: ________ Taylor?

5) Sarah Ellen, b. 1833 Madison Co,Va. Married Noah F. Rife in March 15, (?) 1865 Madison co,va.

6) Allen May, b. 1835 Madison Co,Va. Married Ann S. Utz Jul 28 1859 Madison Co,Va.

7) Edward May . b 1840 Madison Co,Va.

Children of Noel & Sarah (Collins) May:

1) William, b. bet 1863-1866 Va.

Info on Noel's son Thomas & Elzabeth May:

Thomas May , b. Oct 22, 1818 Va, son of Noel & Aleavy (Eddins) May. He died June 20,1873 Fulton Co,Il. He married Elizabeth Scovel Feb 18,1844. Both are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery,Lewistown,Illinois.

Thomas came to Fulton County,Ill from virginia in 1842 where he bought land & was a farmer. At one point a road commissioner of the township. He became ill in 1873 & gypsies sold the May family for 50 dollars a remedy which they thought would help but it did the opposite. As a result he died weeks later June 20,1873.

Elizabeth Scovel was born Jan 27,1826 in Havana,Mason Co,Il to Ira & Mary (Chrisley) Scovel. Elizabeth May died Jan 4,1907 in Fulton Co,Il.

Children of Thomas & Elizabeth May:

1) Mary Susan, b. 1846, 1st marriage to Dudley Geyer, 2nd: William Wilson in 1885, she died in 1925. Buried with Geyer husband in Oak Hill Cemetery,Lewistown,Il.

2) Oleva Jane, b. 1849, Married George Rigdon in 1876, then Daniel Lockard in 1892. She died in 1920 & is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery with first husband.

3) Margaret Almeria, b. 1851, died young. Burial location is unknown.

4) Amanda Emma , b 1854, Married John McDermott in 1873. They moved to South Dakota & is buried out there.

5) Thomas Allen, b. 1856, married Emma Louellen Wheeler in 1877, he died in 1932. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery,Lewistown,Il.

6) Sarah A., b. 1862, married Joseph Littlejohn in 1881. They moved west to the Pueblo,Colorado area & they died out there. They had a daughter Grace. Sarah died in 1915 & Joseph in 1923. They were listed in the 1910 census of El Paso County,Colorado.

7) James May, born Nov 7,1859 Fulton Co,Il. He died Aug 9,1909 Fulton Co,Il. James married Samantha Ellen Coney, daughter of Ira & Ellen (Meeker) Coney, on Oct 24,1883 Fulton Co,Il. Samantha was born Jan 4,1864 Lewistown,Il & died June 29,1935 Fulton Co,Il. Both buried : Oak Hill Cemetery,Lewistown,Il.

James was a well known farmer in rural Lewistown. He died while driving a buggy to Lewistown with his ten year old daughter Edna & a grand child as reported by the Canton register. Edna had to hold his dead body & turn buggy around & head for home with a baby in her lap. Luckily a local woman arrived & assisted helping her get home. James had taken over farming after his father Thomas died. The old May farm in rural Lewistown was sold out of the family around 1935 after being in the family almost 90 years. James belonged to the mystics workers & Modern woodman of America. James & Samantha also raised Duroc Hogs, Jersey Cattle & Percheron Horses. They once sold a team to a Brewery in St. Louis.

James & Samanthas children: Roy, Elnora (May) Jenkins, Don Vern, Dean, Edna & Mildred.
