nee Agnes Van Reid Mathews, d/o Daniel &
Esther Blair (Shaw) Matthews. Death after 1880
“Dr. Michael Hines is thought to have been
born in Winchester, Virginia, to parents William and Mary (Haymaker) Hines.
He practiced medicine from the 1840's until his death and probably learned
his skill from family members. In the obituary of his grandson, Oscar T.
Hines, himself a doctor who served as a U.S. Army surgeon in Cuba during
the Spanish-American War, it was stated that Oscar was the fifth-generation
on his father's side to follow in the medical profession. Michael married
Agnes Van Reid Matthews, the daughter of Col. Daniel Matthews (1779-1842)
and his wife Esther Blair Shaw. Col. Matthews served as Captain of a
company of volunteers during the War of 1812, member of the state
Legislature, Magistrate and also High Sheriff of Rockingham County,
Virginia. Col. Matthews and his wife had two daughters, Agnes and Hannah
Ashbury Matthews. Hannah married Hiram Martz.” (src: Find A Grave)
