Important note
regarding my (BarbR’s) transcription the 1890
Census: The actual 1890 Floyd
Co., Virginia Census was among those destroyed in the fire/flood in
Washington. Fortunately, an abbreviated copy was made before the original was
sent off & it can be found in the Floyd Co., Virginia Court House. The
original was sorted 1st by District, & 2nd by first
letter of a surname. From there it all sort of runs together. This is a
sample of the original: Alum
District Laurence,
Darius 37 Emma Z.
35 Malonia A. 14 Posie S. 12 Authur L. 10 Garland
5 Maimie M. 3 German
S. 5 mo Asa H.
42 Elizabeth
42 Kemper
G. 15 Minnie
A. 13 Albert
W. 9 Cleveland
4 Fitzhue 3 Alabama
4 mo I
see the above as 2 families, one headed by Darius & the other by Asa and
from other records (1880 Census, 1900
Census, Marriages et al) we know that this is the case. Therefore, to make
this transcript user friendly for my own research, I chose to separate into
family groups whenever possible & then sorted the individual families or
individuals alphabetically. An example using the above + a family from
another District: Alum
Ridge Laurence,
Asa H. 42 Elizabeth
42 Kemper
G. 15 Minnie
A. 13 Albert
W. 9 Cleveland
4 Fitzhue 3 Alabama
4 mo Alum
Ridge Laurence,
Darius 37 Emma Z.
35 Malonia A. 14 Posie S. 12 Authur L. 10 Garland
5 Maimie M. 3 German
S. 5 mo Jacksonville Lawrence,
Thomas 65 Lulah E. 23 And as usual, over
the years I have added notes to myself & will continue to do so. I have
chosen to leave these annotations in this posted transcription as this is
also the version I will be using. Ignore if you wish. (surnames with [] are a
reference to Families of Floyd Co., VA. This is an example of some of my
