Wood in Kanawha Co. is not Andrew Jackson Wood, son of Richard & Elizabeth (Dehart) Wood, who married Alethea/Elsey (etc.) Wood.  The Kanawha man was Albert Jackson Woods, and he married Aletha Ann Clean, 25 Aug 1847, Kanawha Co., VA. She was born October 25, 1914, in Bowie, Maryland, a daughter of the late James B. and Nannie (Spangler) Woods. Mrs. Shiflett was employed by Stillwater of Augusta Springs for many years and later retired from Unifi of Staunton. She enjoyed attending church and taking trips with friends. She was preceded her in death by her husband on June 9, 1989 and two sons, Earl K. and Bobby W. Shiflett. Family includes three sons, Henry D. "Boo" Shiflett and his wife, Joyce, of Millboro, Wallace L. Shiflett of Staunton, and Danny Ray Shiflett and his wife, Annie, of Craigsville; our daughters, Louise Fridley and her husband, Raymond, Joyce Brooks and her special friend, Ernie Nuckols, Patricia Varner and a special brother-in-law, Bill Varner, and Bernice Hammer and her husband, Don, all of Staunton; 18 grandchildren; a number of great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family as she was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2008, in the Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens by the Pastor Kemper L. Dean. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. (*should probably read “mother in law”) 2007 Death: 9-20-2007 2007 Obit: Eva (Woods) Deal, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends, died early Thursday morning at Colonial Vista as she slept. Eva was born on June 16, 1907, in Glenwood, WA. She was the seventh of eleven children, two of whom died as infants. Her family moved to Centralia, then to Loomis and finally to Whitestone, where her father, a Brethren minister, settled the family on twenty acres of sagebrush near Spectacle Lake. They cleared the land, planted alfalfa to feed the two cows and the work horses, raised chickens and planted a garden to feed the large family. Later, they borrowed money to plant apple trees. Before the trees were more than a year old, the locusts came. Eva remembered getting up and seeing so many locusts that the sky was black. The swarm ate everything; the garden, the crops and even the trees, which were chewed down to little bits of wood. When asked about her childhood, she replied, "I don't know how we made it, but we did. But life was hard for everybody then." When Eva was sixteen, her father died when he was thrown from a horse. Determined to graduate from high school, she lived with a family in Tonasket and helped with the housekeeping to pay for her board while she attended school during the week. After finishing high school, she came to Wenatchee and worked in the warehouse for a summer, to make enough money to start the nursing program. When Doctor Mitchell examined her, he found a heart murmur that was probably the result of the flu epidemic, so he told her that she would not be strong enough for the training. Eva remembered saying, "Please give me a chance. Let me try." Reluctantly, the doctor allowed her into the nursing program at the Deaconess Hospital. Working twelve hour shifts, she graduated at the top of her class and became an RN. After a nursing job at the Omak Hospital and delivering two of her favorite nieces in their homes, she returned to Wenatchee, where she became night supervisor and surgery supervisor at the Deaconess Hospital where she had trained. Because the family could not pay off the loan on the Whitestone land, the bank took the property and Eva's mother, grandmother and two sisters, came to share the home she rented. She worked nights and slept during the day, while her sisters attended school. Later, she volunteered at the Red Cross blood drawings for many years. In 1934, she married John Deal and in 1940, they moved to a home in East Wenatchee, where they raised their sons. These were hard times for everyone, and Eva and her husband had to make full use of the one acre of land on 11th Street to feed the hungry boys. They raised chickens for eggs and meat, kept a cow, planted a large garden, even had a few pigs (and they always seemed to find a way to escape into the neighbor's garden) and later planted fruit trees. Eva cooked, cleaned, washed clothes by hand, took care of her children and worked in the garden. When John was away, she milked the cow, morning and night. They planted more fruit trees near their home and purchased orchards in Sunnyslope and East Wenatchee and she was always there to help with the harvest and feed hungry workers, who often included family members coming to help with the harvest. It is no wonder that she had a major heart attack when she was 45, and it was amazing that she lived to see her 100th birthday. Eva lost her husband, John, and her son, David, while she still lived in East Wenatchee. She is survived by sons, Larry (Wendy) and Steven; daughter-in-law, Judy; grandchildren, Laurie (John) Houck, Michael (Sharon), Andrew (Meghan), Rosie (Jeff) White, Meghan (Ryan) Hein, Daniel and Jacob; 11 great-grandchildren; special niece, Rita Baugh (who was like a daughter) and many other wonderful nieces and nephews she remained close to throughout her life. Family was always important to her and she loved to find a baby she could hold and cuddle. Like many others of her generation, she has been an inspiration to many and an example of courage, love and dedication for her family. A Private Family Memorial will be held.
