Josephine Elizabeth Vaden Sweeney, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 5, 2007, after a long battle with congestive heart failure. She was born February 11, 1927 in Roanoke, to the late Sallie Vaden, and was a lifelong Roanoke resident.

Josephine worked for the American Viscose and retired from Stuart McGuire, then worked as a volunteer for the Salvation Army, where her husband, Charlie worked part-time receiving donations, some in Roanoke and Vinton, but mostly in Salem. She was a member of Melrose Baptist Church in the late 1930's and early 1940's, where she was led to the Lord. She later joined Shenandoah Baptist Church.

Jo loved her family and the time spent with them. She was always quick to brag on accomplishments of her daughter and son-in-law, grandchildren and their respective spouses and her great-grandchildren. After phone calls and visits from her family, immediate or extended, she was always ready to share with other family and friends of those special times. The job she took most serious was that of daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by the 2002 Homegoing of her husband of 57 years, Charlie Tas Sweeney.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Harry and her husband, David of Hampton; three grandchildren, Deanna Vanderwarker and her husband, Matt, Devon Achenbach and her husband, Joel and David Harry, Jr., all of Hampton; four great-grandchildren, Marcus, Alex, and Samantha Achenbach and Bryce Vanderwarker and her longtime friend, Bertie Henderson of Salem, who she thought of as the sister she never had.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Lewis-Gale Medical Center, the staff of Unit 4 and Unit 2 of Salem Health and Rehabilitation, the doctors and nurses of Sentara CarePlex ICU and Interim Health Care of Hampton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Bethel Baptist Church, Hampton with a funeral service to begin at 7 p.m. Pastor Lloyd Donica and Pastor Matt Vanderwarker will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2007 at Lotz Funeral Home, Main Street, Salem, Va. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Lotz Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Lloyd Donica and Pastor Matt Vanderwarker officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1647 Briarfield Road, Hampton, Va. 23669.
