She was a member of the Gospel Light Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin Turner and a grandson, Greg Turner.

Surviving are her husband, Clinton Ferris; son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Linda Turner of Forest; daughter and son-in-law, Paulette and Calvin Gray of Vinton; grandson, Michael Gray and wife, Amy, of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Tonya Hodges and husband, Larry, of Vinton; great-granddaughters, Taylor and Haley Hodges; brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Bernice Sutphin of Fincastle; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be at the Gospel Light Baptist Church, 2 p.m., Monday, October 4, 2004, with the Rev. Earl Clemons officiating. Interment will be in the Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's East Chapel, Bonsack. 977-3909

He was born February 3, 1925 in Carroll County to John William Sutphin and Mary Etta McGrady Sutphin.

He is survived by one sister, Beulah Turner Farris of Cloverdale; one brother, Gene Sutphin of Troutville; several nieces and nephews; several grand-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, October 18, 1993, at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville with the Rev. Clarence Marshall officiating. Burial in the Laurel Fork Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial service was held Sunday afternoon on the campus of the former Wood College in Mathiston for Dr. Felix Sutphin, who served as its president for 30 years.

Sutphin, of Union, died May 18 at the age of 96, according to published reports. His family said he continued his generosity in death as in life by donating his body to University Medical Center as an anatomical gift.

"We mourn the loss of former Wood Junior College President Dr. Felix Sutphin," the town of Mathiston tweeted after his death. "He held Wood Jr. together by his love for the school. RIP."

The Brewer native attended Wood Junior College from 1936-38, where he met his late wife, Elene. Sutphin graduated from Millsaps College with a bachelor of arts and Chandler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta with a divinity degree. When he was appointed president of Wood, he was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Millsaps.

Sutphin was not only an educator but also a minister of churches in Mississippi and Georgia starting in 1934. The first church that he served was Mt. Moriah at Ticky Bend while a student at Wood.

In 1957 he became the first Wood alumnus to be named president of the college. After retiring in 1987 and moving to Meridian he served churches as retired supply.

During his 30 years leading Wood, Sutphin is credited with bringing the school from the brink of closure with an endowment of only $150,000 to a stable financial position with an endowment of $4.36 million, according to his obituary. The physical plant doubled in size and the college's enrollment increased from 77 students to 1,300.

In addition to the unique modular calendar, many new programs were added to the academic offerings at the college. One was the establishment of the Center for Church Leadership Development and the Rural Ministries Program.

"Being cognizant of and sensitive to the needs of students, faculty and the community, he and his wife worked tirelessly to ensure that the total person was developed," his obituary reads. "Students were provided opportunities to experience activities that reached beyond the classroom. Faculty members were provided occasions to grow together as a family, and the community was encouraged to participate in college events. The president's home was a home to all and all were invited to come."

His son, Dr. Phil A. Sutphin of Durant, and two grandsons survive Sutphin.

Edra Verlon Sutphin Sledge, 83, died December 21, 2013 at Graceland Care Center in New Albany. Stanley Ellis Sledge, 83, died January 4, 2014 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Eddie and Stan's marriage of 67 years began on May 25, 1946 in Brewer. The years were not always easy but they were full and productive. After a few years in Texas, they lived many years in South California before retiring to Mississippi in 1992, when Stan opened a small upholstery shop. Their love of life and each other has been an example for many. They will be greatly missed by family in Mississippi and Kansas, California and Washington.

Eddie was born on April 23, 1930, in Brewer to Arda Sanderson Sutphin and Charles Asa Sutphin. She is survived by her brother, Felix Sutphin of Meridian; one niece, Rose Hare (Mike) of Shannon and five nephews, Phil Sutphin (Peggy) of Newton, John Sutphin, Jr. (Emily) of Leawood, Kan., Cary Sutphin (Sylvia) of Starkville, Charles Suphin in Pontotoc and Jason (Erica) in Richland.

She was preceded in death by per parents and two brothers, John Sutphin, Jr. and Willis Sutphin.

Stan was born on February 6, 1930 in Pontotoc to Lexa Birdsong Sledge and Ellis Sledge in Pontotoc.

He is survived by his brother, Bill Sledge of Seattle, Wash.; and a cousin, Glenn Sledge of Pontotoc.

And many great-nieces and great nephews who will always remember Aunt Sis's sweet smile and delicious cooking and Uncle Stan's good nature and unending stories.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Brewer Methodist Church with Cary Sutphin officiating. The graveside service will be conducted by Darrel Sanderson.

Dorothy Mae Sutphin Edens

Dorothy Mae Sutphin Edens, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed peacefully from this life after a short hospital stay on Tuesday January 16, 2018, in Spokane, Washington, where she resided for the past few years with her son Mark and his family. She was 86. Dorothy was born to the late Chalmers and Thurza Sutphin on October 29, 1931, in Mars Hill, Indiana. After graduating Decatur Central High School in 1949, Dorothy was employed at Bridgeport Brass in Indianapolis where she met her eventual husband, the late J. Gayle Edens.

Preceding Dorothy in death were siblings Paul Gabhart, Keith Gabhart, Lillie Gabhart Williams, Ruby Gabhart Lair and Jean Sutphin Davis. Dorothy is survived by siblings Frieda Sutphin Coman, Pauline Sutphin Jones and Earl Sutphin. She is also survived by sons Doug Edens(Jody), Jeff Edens (Debbie) and Mark Edens (Beth), grandchildren Matthew Edens, Joseph Edens, Jacob Edens, LeLyne Edens Joyner, Dayna Edens and Lindsey Edens and 10 great grandchildren. Dorothy was a member of the Plainfield Christian Church. Hennessey Funeral Home in Spokane will handle final arrangements including cremation.
