According to Find A Grave, this is the stone of Michael H. Surface with dod April 17, 1908 and if you zoom in on the photo it sure appears to be correctly transcribed. However, his son’s obit states, “His father was killed fighting in the service of the Confederacy during the War between the states.” Military record states the same. And Octavia m. 2^nd in 1866 as a widow. I believe 1863 is closer to his true DOD.

Christiansburg, Oct 10, 1937, Charles W. Surface, 78 well known Christiansburg, resident, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. Floyd Smith, on College street, at 6 o'clock this morning after an Illness of more than one year.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday morning at 11 O'clock at the home of Mrs. Smith with interment in Sunset Cemetery.

Mr. Surface was born in Riner, Montgomery County, May 22, 1859, the son of Michael and Octavia Surface. His father was killed fighting in the service of the Confederacy during the War between the states.

Moving to Christiansburg 20 years ago Mr. Surface became a leader of the community and held several public officers during his lifetime. He was a large landowner and stock dealer.

From 1904 to 1012 he was supervisor of the Auburn magisterial district and served as Montgomery County treasurer for 12 years, his last term ending January 1, 1924. He was one of the organizers of the First National Bank and President for a number of years. He also had been president of the Surface-Angle Motor company and of the Economy Lumber company, retiring from the He also had Motor company and of the Economy Lumber company, retiring from the latter post because of Ill Health.

Surviving are two children, Mrs. W. M. Bennett Jr., of Nazareth, Penn., and Mrs. R. Floyd Smith, of Christiansburg,. and three grandchildren, Charles Surface Bennett and William M. Bennett, III and Charles William Smith.
