pedestrian struck by car dies An elderly pedestrian
struck by a car this week in Simi Valley has died, authorities said
Friday. Mary Hutchins, 86, was
pronounced dead at Simi Valley Hospital at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, said Armando
Chavez, a county senior deputy medical examiner. Hutchins, a Simi Valley
resident, was crossing Yosemite Avenue near Nutwood Circle about 4 p.m.
Wednesday when she was struck by a northbound car, Simi Valley police said.
She was rushed to the hospital, where she was initially in critical
condition. Hutchins died from multiple blunt-force injuries, Chavez
said. A preliminary investigation
determined Hutchins was crossing midblock when she stepped in front of a
vehicle, authorities said. A vehicle in the right lane slowed for her, but
she was struck by a car in the left lane, police said. The investigation found no
evidence of wrongdoing by the driver, who tried to stop before striking
Hutchins, police said. Police identified the driver as Hasmukhal
Patel, 44, of Simi Valley. Hutchins liked her
independence but didn't drive, so she often walked the half-block from her
home to the grocery store, from where she was returning when she was hit,
said her daughter-in-law, Donna Hutchins, 61. Donna and her husband, Joe,
Hutchins' oldest son, had told her they did not want her walking during
heavy-traffic parts of the day, but she dismissed those concerns as silly,
Donna Hutchins said. Relatives were devastated
when they learned of the accident. "Why she chose to cross where she did
... we don't know," she said. The relatives feel no
animosity toward the driver, Donna Hutchins said. "Our heart goes out to
this family," she said. "It's a double tragedy." Hutchins never regained
consciousness, and relatives are grateful she didn't suffer, Donna Hutchins
said. "It was merciful that God decided to take her." Known by her middle name,
Virginia, Hutchins worked in the Pentagon and served in the Signal Corps
during World War II, her daughter-in-law said. She moved many times around
the country with her husband, Lewis, and had four children: three boys and a
daughter. The daughter died of cancer at 18, Donna Hutchins said. Hutchins
had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Hutchins and her husband
retired to his home town of Cordell, Okla., where she cared for him when he
suffered from dementia in his later years. A year after he died in 2006,
Donna and Joe Hutchins brought her to live with them at their Simi Valley
home because she had grown lonely and also was injured in a fall, Donna
Hutchins said. Hutchins had a heart attack
when she first came to California but later bounced back, started getting out
and about, and enjoyed being close to a granddaughter and great-grandson who
live in the area, her daughter-in-law said. She had a good life the last

80, was called home Monday, January 21, 2008. He was born April 16, 1927 in
Eggleston, VA, and at the age of 16, joined the United States Army where he
served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, as well as Vietnam. Never one to talk much
about these military experiences, he took pride in the fact that he served
his country and was also highly decorated, including a Purple Heart. Frank
was preceded in death by his mother and father, Frank Clyde and Della
Sumpter; brothers, Delmas and Sam Sumpter; and sisters, Bonnie Sumpter Vaught
and Daisy Mae Sumpter Minton; as well as his onetime wife and life-long
friend, Betty Josephine Mefford. He is survived by
two sisters, Laura Vivian Sumpter Barnhart and Virginia Sumpter Hutchins; one
brother, Wise Sumpter; two sons, Frank Carl Sumpter, Jr. of Moore, OK and
Timothy Edmond Sumpter of Eufaula, OK; two granddaughters and their husbands,
Melissa and Robert Hios of Midlothian, Virginia and
Jennifer and Ronnie Copeland of Moore, OK; and two great-grandsons, Jordan Hios and Devon Copeland. Frank was loved by all who met
him and will be sorely missed. His laughter and light taught us all so much
and he left us all with the knowledge that the most important things in life
are also the most simple things in life. Funeral
services will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 26, 2008, in the Resthaven
