He was a retired crane operator with the Lynchburg Foundary Company. He was a member of the Morgan Chapel United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Earl, Hassel, Garland, Ted and Cecil Sumner; one sister, Reba S. Webb; one grandson. Surviving is his wife, Ella Edna Dobbins Sumner; two sons, Donald V. Sumner, Radford, Jackie W. Sumner, Dublin; one daughter, Anna Sumner Akers, Pulaski; three stepsons, Edward Dobbins, Phoenix, AZ, Donald Dobbins, Fredericksburg, Haven Dobbins, Bowling Green; one brother, James (Happy) Sumner, Christiansburg; eight grandchildren, eleven step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 25, 1995 at 2 p.m. at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. Michael Bond officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin.
