Note: Elizabeth & children Wm & John benefitted greatly from Peter Geurant’s 1859 will.

“I find John H Shockey in the book written by Jim Woods called "Snuffers". In it is stated that "Not only had Guerrant (Peter) fathered Julia Jackson Snuffer/Kefauver, he also had two illegitimate sons by Elizabeth Shockey, a neighbor. Among those enumerated close by his home in the 1850 census was an Elizabeth Shockey, 25. Guerrant was then 51.
Guerrant set up a trust for Elizabeth and her two sons, William and John, to be administered by Flemming Poff. It included a gray mare and a colt, a yoke of oxen and a milk cow and all his land south of the old Pine Spur Road. He stated that they could occupy the lands, with any profit from them going to Elizabeth until the year 1875....a professionally carved headstone once stood over Peter Guerrant's solitary grave in a gently sloping hillside pasture overlooking Floyd route 648. The inscription says he was born 14 Sept. 1799 and died 10 Aug. 1859. It was a befitting monument for a prominent citizen in an era when few could afford such a marker. ...But Peter Guerrant is not forgotten. Kefauver remembers hearing about him, and living descendants of his two illegitimate sons, William and John Shockey, point out with wry amusement and some pride that he was their ancestor.

Mrs. Margaret Jamison Shockey, 87, of Gainesville, Ga., passed away Sunday, August 10. 2008, at the Bell Minor Home following an extended illness. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2008, in Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, Va., with the Rev. Ken Scoggins officiating. Mrs. Shockey was born in Bent Mountain, Va., and was the daughter of the late Stanhope Jamison and Mary Ellen (Coles) Jamison. She was of the Presbyterian faith. Mrs. Shockey was preceded in death by her husband, Herman C. Shockey Jr. Mrs. Shockey is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Phillip Shockey Jr. and Patricia, of Gainesville; grandsons, Jason Phillip Shockey, of Gainesville, and John William Shockey, of Homer. FRANCIS SINER SHOCKEY, SR., 86, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born to Herman Clinton and Ethel Siner Shockey on August, 14, 1919 and was preceded by his parents, wife, Margaret Slaydon Shockey, and brother, Herman Clinton Shockey, Jr.

He was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. He was a life member of the Floyd Masonic Lodge #329.

He assisted in the chartering of the Check Ruritan Club, of which he was a member, and which was later incorporated into the Floyd Ruritan Club. He attended Virginia Tech, and during summer breaks worked at the Newport News Shipyard.

After leaving college he worked as Postmaster at the Copper Hill Post Office. He was employed by Sealtest and was a Dairy Farm Specialist for 35 years working from the Christiansburg plant. He was also employed in the same capacity by Kraft Foods in Independence. After working for 20 years, he retired in 1982.

He was instrumental in developing the first operator assisted telephone service in Floyd County and Bent Mountain. He surveyed, helped build and develop electrical service to rural customers in Copper Hill and Bent Mountain.

Survivors include: sons and daughters-in-law, Frances Jr. and Donna Shockey and Harold and Loretta Shockey, both of Copper Hill, Gary and Judy Shockey of Roanoke; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 19, at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd with Rev. Greg Mills officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke. A Masonic Service was conducted by Masonic Lodge #329 at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wood Funeral Home.
