1864 Death: 2-16-1865 Elmira, Chemung Co., NY

1864 Burial: Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung Co., NY with the following note:

Dozier was the son of John Shelor and Nancy Howell. He married Elizabeth Southern on September 28, 1849 in Pulaski County, VA, and they bought a farm in Meadows of Dan, Patrick County, VA. Their children were Mary Agnes, William Caldwell, John Floyd and Thomas Lee Shelor.

Dozier was in Company K, 50th Virginia Infantry, CSA. They fought at Kelly's Store, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. He was wounded on the line of retreat from Gettysburg and was captured in the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse on 5-12-1864. He was a Prisoner of War at Pt. Lookout, Maryland, from 5-18-1864 to 7-30-1864 and at Elmira, New York from 8-2-1864 until his death on 2-16-1865.

His stone is marked 2181; J. Shelor which is the named used in his military records.

Mrs. Gloria Shelor Vaughn, age 72 of Meadows of Dan, passed away Monday, November 21, 2011 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

She was born in Patrick County on August 8, 1939 to the late Allen and Rillie Scott Shelor.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by five siblings, Eugene Shelor, Elizabeth Campbell, Judy Holt, Harry W. Shelor and Michael Wayne Shelor. She had been a member of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church for 36 years, was a devoted wife, loving mother, a cherished grandmother, and loved her dog, Daisy. 

Mrs. Vaughn is survived by her husband of 42 years, Herman Vaughn of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Robert Jones of Riner, and Wanda and Elmer Quesenberry of Meadows of Dan; a step-daughter, Vickie Godfrey of Danville; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Mike Shelor of Meadows of Dan; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Vaughn will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will follow in the New Dan River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times at the home.

Arlene S. Lawson, 84, of Floyd, Va., our beloved "Granny," passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2010. A native of Floyd, Va., she retired from the Virginia Department of Social Services after 35 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kate and Roy Sweeney; her husband, Floyd Lawson; and a sister, Marie Harrison. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Lynwood Gearheart; a brother, James Sweeney; and three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Sam Burton, of Christiansburg, Va.; Karen and Chuck Feldman, of Kinnelon, N.J.; and Sandra Lawson and Joe Gomez, of Lafayette, Colo. She is also survived by her grandchildren and their spouses, Josh and Theresa Feldman, Sam II and Charity Burton, Shawn Feldman and Dan Feldman; and two greatgrandchildren, Evan Feldman and Quinn Burton. We are grateful for the time we had to spend with Granny, for the many gifts she gave us, and for the unending love she showed to all that she knew. She will be greatly missed by both friends and family. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010, at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Todd Triplett officiating. Wilma Lawson Padgett, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Crest View Villa in Parkville, Md., wife of Alvin L. Padgett. She was born on November 19, 1931, the eleventh child of the late Turner Madison and Lucinda Agnes (Shelor) Lawson in Meadows of Dan, Va. In 1949 Wilma graduated from Meadows of Dan High School in Meadows of Dan. After working and living in Richmond, Va. for several years, Wilma and her husband moved to Maryland. She continued her formal education at Towson University where she received a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Human Resources. She retired from CSX Transportation after 27 years of service. Wilma developed an interest in genealogy by researching and compiling books about her ancestors and those books were published and have been used for reference/information by multi-generational members of the family. In addition to traveling with her husband, she played golf, used her artistic talents to create homemade greeting cards, served as a volunteer at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson, Md., sang with the church choir and performed solos, used her ballroom dancing skill to participate in a fundraiser held at her retirement home, and was an active member in church in the communities where she lived. In addition to her husband, Wilma is survived by one step-daughter, Deborah Padgett; one step-son, Glen Padgett; grandchildren, Jeff, David, Lisa, and Julie; also survived by great-grandchildren, Patrick, Laura, Nicholas, Daniel, Ethan, Andrew, Hannah; one sister, Irene L. Simpson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn Anne Padgett; step-daughter, Susan Padgett Dandois; one granddaughter, Lindsay; four brothers, Matt, Floyd, John Ellis, and Guy Lawson; and six sisters, Ida Cruise, Edna Cockram, Susannah Lawson, Orene Harris, Lila Buchanan and Clara Desper. Ted was born in Huntington, W.Va., and graduated from Indiana University. He was a successful business owner and worked with insurance and financial planning. Ted had a special love for music and sang in the Methodist Church Choir for many years.

Lucy Shelor Tanner, 89, of Copper Hill, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2011. She was born on August 7, 1921 in Raleigh County, W.Va.

Mrs. Tanner was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine Tanner, Sr. and a son, Gary Wayne Tanner. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Floyd. She loved flower arranging and being involved in the D.A.R. and Garden Club. She loved all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with a special affection for Tristan.

She is survived by one sister, Anna Belle Salyers; one daughter, Linda Cole; one son and daughter-in-law, Butch and Katherine Tanner; six grandchildren, Shawn, Shane, Michelle, Rick, Sasha, and Gabriella, and eleven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Presbyterian Church of Floyd with Pastor Shawn Tanner and the Reverend David Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Floyd. Yvonne Caruthers Shelor, 70, of Greenbrier County, passed away Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Ronceverte.

Born March 22, 1942, at Olcott, she was the daughter of the late Clinton Cody Caruthers and the late Chloe Opal Shrewsbury Caruthers.

Yvonne had worked as a switchboard operator and was of the Baptist faith. She was an avid gardener and reader and was a published author herself. Another one of her special interests was sharing the Good News of the Kingdom of God!

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie Shelor; a sister, Patty Caruthers; and a son-in-law, Bo Haley.

Survivors include two daughters, Alicia Michelle Haley of Redmond, Wash., and Stephanie Nichole Stevens and husband, Sam, of Goodview, Va.; a stepdaughter, Trisha Shelor White and husband, John, of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren, Ana Cronin, Ivy Colazo, Jessica Hedrick and Sarah Hedrick; four sisters, Brenda Rookstool and husband, David, of North Carolina, Nadine Redden and husband, Steve, of Rainelle, Sue McAlexander of Georgia, and Annabelle Schoolcraft and husband, Jimmy, of Charmco; two brothers, Curtis Caruthers and wife, Shirley, of Crawley, and Leon Caruthers and wife, Elsie, of Covington, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Raymond Nelson Johnson, 85, of the 1900 block of Lisbon Road, died Oct. 19, 1995, in Portsmouth.

Mr. Johnson, a retired supervisor, worked for Methods and Standards Naval Air Station for 31 years. He was a Protestant and a native of Excelsior Springs, Mo. He was past president of the Toastmasters Club of Norfolk, a member of the Elks, and a Mason. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his loving wife, Vivian Johnson; one daughter, Bonnie Richards of Raytown, Mo.; three brothers, Donald Johnson of Portsmouth, Clarence Johnson of Topeka, Kan., Edward F. Johnson Jr. of Topeka; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Vivian S. Johnson, 91, of the 1900 block of Lisbon Road, passed away April 26, 2008, in her home. A native of Winding Gulf, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Emmitt B. and Mary S. Shelor and the widow of Raymond N. Johnson.

She retired from Naval Air Station, Norfolk, as an aircraft mechanic after 24 years of service. She was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church and was past president of the Portsmouth Emblem Club No. 252.

She is survived by her nephew, Donald Gibson and wife Pat of Syracuse, N.Y.; three nieces, Gail Harper of Colorado Springs, Colo., Laurie Meadows of Shady Springs, W.Va., and Linda Fleming and husband Dan of Portsmouth, and several great, great-great- and great-great-great-nieces and -nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Bill Shelor and her sisters, Lillian Clere and Ruth Baggette.

A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, with the Rev. Frank Jennings officiating. The burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Cecil Willie Wood, 85, of Meadows of Dan, Va., passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at his home. 

He was born in Meadows of Dan on May 6, 1925, to the late Cecil Alexander and Byrda Shelor Wood. 

In addition to his parents, Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. "Becky" Shelor Wood; a sister, Iris Wood Stanley and her husband, Luther B. Stanley Sr.; a brother, Duke Willard Wood; and a nephew, Jeffery Elwood Stanley. 

He served in the United States Army Air Corps-8th Air Force during World War II as a Technical Sergeant assigned to the 389th Bomb Group and flew 18 missions on the B24 Liberator. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 37 years of service, of those he served for 18 years as Post Master of the Meadows of Dan Post Office. He was a charter member of the Meadows of Dan Volunteer Fire Department and served as their first president. He was a member of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, and also served on the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church Cemetery Committee. He was a life member of VFW Post #8467.

Mr. Wood is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Dula Belle Wood Agee, and William "Bill" Agee, of Patrick Springs; one sister-in-law, Joy Agee Wood, of Wytheville; four nieces, Peggy S. Barkley, Catheryn S. Vaughn and husband, Mike, Suzanne W. Renegar and husband, Ed, and Sheri W. Martin and husband, Randy; five nephews, Luther B. Stanley Jr. and wife, Ann, Darrell Agee and wife, Linda, Gregory Wood and wife, Denise, Kevin Wood and wife, Suzanna, and Warren Agee; eight great-nieces; 12 great nephews; 11 great great nieces; seven great-great nephews; two great great great nieces; and five great great great nephews. 

The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Peggy, Catheryn and Mike, for the loving and dedicated care of their Uncle Willie. The family also wishes to acknowledge and thank his two caregivers, Amanda and Mary, and the Mountain Valley Hospice for their excellent care. Funeral Services for Mr. Wood will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church with Pastor Michael Shockley and the Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, January 14, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church.
