James P. Griffith was born in Virginia about 72 years ago. Came to Missouri when a young man. He was converted in Lewis County under the preaching of Elder J. M. Lillard; was ordained to the gospel ministry by Lewistown Baptist Church. He began work in the ministry about 1875 and for six or eight years was one of the most active ministers in Northeast Missouri. About 1881, while in a revival meeting in Clark County, Mo., he was stricken with paralysis which completely disabled his left side. For 36 years he was an invalid, but his indomitable spirit enabled him for much of this time to go among his brethren to preach frequently and really to enjoy life. He never lost interest in his Lord’s work, nor his faith in the doctrine of grace. He had a childlike faith and trusted in God for everything – daily necessities and all. He was largely instrumental in organizing Mt. Salem Baptist Association and always attended its meetings when it was possible. It was in August 1916, while on his way to the annual meeting of the Association that he fell from a train and broke his paralyzed limb. He was taken back to the Confederate Home where he had been living for a short time, and for eighteen months he lay there waiting for the end. Last time this writer visited Bro. Griffith and found him, though unable to turn himself in bed, still optimistic in spirit, with great faith in God and patiently waiting his summons. The end came February 14, 1917. His body rests in the beautiful Confederate Cemetery at Higginsville.
