Mabel Irene Duncan, age 91, of Cedar Vale, Kansas died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, in Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

She was born August 20, 1910 to Robert A. and Christine (Decker) Howell in Chanute, Kansas. When she was young, her family moved to Cedar Vale, where she grew up and attended school.

On August 29, 1929, she married John Wesley Duncan in Cedar Vale, where they made their home. Mrs. Duncan worked in the medical field for many years, starting at Hays Hospital in Cedar Vale, then at Meek and Stinses Clinic in Arkansas City. Arkansas City Memorial Hospital in x-ray and later for Dr. Morton in x-ray and lab. Mr. Duncan preceded her in death on June 8, 1988.

Mrs. Duncan was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Eva Duncan, Cedar Vale, Kansas, three daughters and son-in-laws, Christine and Stanley Wilmeth. Wichita, KS, Nina and Jack Archer, Arkansas City. Kansas and Nellie and Tommy McGathy. Cedar Vale, Kansas, sixteen grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren and twenty great great grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2002, in the Cedar Vale Cemetery in Cedar Vale under the direction of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas.

The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. Contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed to David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Box 7, Sedan, Kansas 67361.

David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan is in charge of arrangements.

The Rev. David B Howell, 80, former United Brethren circuit rider died Sunday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Strack, west of Humboldt. 

He came to Kansas from Indiana fifty-five years ago, and was in the ministry forty years. He leaves his wife, to whom he was married in Elk county in 1884; four daughters, Mrs. John Jordan and Miss Opal Howell, Chanute, Mrs. Roy Bailey of Earlton, and Mrs. Henry Strack, Humboldt; two sons, Burel Howell, Chanute, and Ira Howell, Yates Center; and one brother, Lemuel Howell, Chanute.

Clyde and Ralph Howell, Robert Howell and family of Cedar Vale and Mrs. W. S. Howell of Havana attended the funeral of their uncle, the Rev. D. B. Howell, at Chanute Tuesday.

Roy Howell. aged 58, a former resident of this community and a graduate of Sedan high school, died at his home in Independence on March 16 Funeral services were held on March 18.

He was forced to retire from business due to a heart ailment and it was a heart attack which caused his death.

Roy P. Howell was born in Chanute in 1882, the son of Henry and Mary Howell. When he was six years of age the family moved to Chautauqua county where he grew to manhood. He graduated from Sedan high School in 1903. He later became preacher at the Peru Christian church and also was engaged in business at Niotaze at one time. He went from here to Dewey and moved to Independence 15 years ago. He operated a service station at 17th and Laurel.

He was married in August 1935 to Miss Frank[ie] Yoe, who survives. Other survivors are a son. Roy Jr. three brothers, Clyde, Earl and Ralph; four sisters, Mrs. N. A. Stephenson of Sedan, Mrs. L N. Pittman of Howard, Mrs. W. R. Nelson of Peru and Mrs. Harry Harkrader of Seneca, Mo.
