Co., VA. Obituary: January 27, 1916 Mr. Howard is survived by
his widow (Mary Elizabeth Earls, whose father, Wm. H. Earls was from Floyd),
three sons, a step-son and a step-daughter. His widow lives at 633
Marshall Avenue, S. W., and had intended leaving here today to join her
husband at Stuart. A(sa) W. Howard, another
son is a well-known merchandise broker here, and C. A. Howard, Jr., is
connected with the National Cash Register Company in Roanoke. Dennis L.
lives at Monmouth, Ill., and is expected here tomorrow. Mrs. W. H.
Clark, a daughter, lives at Stuart. Miss Louise Cheshire, a
step-daughter, is attending school in Philadelphia, and a stepson, Benjamin
Cheshire, is attached to the naval vessel Ontario, now stationed in Cuban
waters. Mrs. W. D. Vaughan, of Amos, Floyd county and Mrs. P. F.
Shelton, of Roanoke, are sisters. Mr. Howard was a Mason of
high rank and that order probably will have charge of funeral
arrangements. For some years he was district supervisor for the Singer
Sewing Machine Company of this city. He left here a month ago to take
temporary charge of the Singer Company's office at Danville and was at Stuart
on business when he was stricken. It is understood he suffered an
attack of heart trouble last week, but quickly recovered, and had been

Francis Joseph Maher of Brooklyn, NY, b. 6-11-1915, d. 8-10-1995. 1995 Obit for Francis Joseph Maher: Roanoke Times, Saturday, August 12, 1995 Francis Joseph Maher, of
Blacksburg, Emeritus Professor of Engineering at Virginia Tech, died August
10, 1995. He was born in Brooklyn, N. Y. in 1915. Professor Maher was graduated
from Manhattan College and received his Master of Science Degree in Civil
Engineering from Virginia Tech. He joined the Virginia Tech faculty in 1937
and taught there until his retirement in 1978--41 years. Professor Maher was
a Registered Professional Engineer and a member of both the Virginia and
National Society of Professional Engineers. He was a life member of the
American Society of Engineering Education and an Associate Fellow of the
American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Honor societies include
Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, and the Research Society of Sigma Xi. He was the
recipient of several major teaching awards, the Wine Award, and the Western
Electric Fund Award of the American Society for Engineering Education. In
1978 he was named to "Outstanding Educators in America." At his
retirement, the Frank J. Maher Award for Teaching Excellence was established
in his honor, and a scholarship was created for a deserving student in the
Department of Engineering Science. In April 1995, the Frank Maher
Professorship in Engineering Science and Mechanics was established. Professor Maher is survived
by his wife, Jean Howard Maher; a son, Dr. Thomas H. Maher, Blacksburg; a
daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Jean and Travis J. Tysinger
of Woodberry Forest, Va.; two brothers, Joseph C. Maher, Brooklyn, N.Y., and
Leo T. Maher, Lake San Marcos, Calif.; and a sister, Catherine Edwards of
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Maureen
Maher, David Maher, and William Maher, Pittsburg, Pa., Andrew Tysinger, Charlotte, N.C., and Michael Tysinger, Fayetteville, N.C. He was preceded in death by
two brothers, Cornelius Maher and Jeremiah Maher. Funeral services will be
held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, August 12, 1995, at St. Mary's Catholic Church
with Father Donald LeMay officiating. Interment will follow in Westview

August 30, 2009 Jean Howard Maher, of
Blacksburg, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2009, at her
Westminster-Canterbury residence in Charlottesville, Va. She had celebrated
her 94th birthday on August 2, 2009. Mrs. Maher was born in Roanoke, Va., the
youngest daughter of Ruth Samuels Howard and Asa William Howard, and was
preceded in death by three sisters; and a brother. As a young woman, she
developed a life-long love of classical dancing, and for a number of years
she taught ballet and ballroom dancing. While attending Roanoke College, she
met a handsome young V.P.I engineering professor
from Brooklyn, Francis Joseph Maher. They were married in 1939, and their
love affair continued until the death of her beloved Frank 56 years later in
1995. Jean loved Blacksburg and V.P.I., and the many wonderful friendships
and associations that came with life in a university town. She was a real
Southern lady who loved to entertain. For her, being a wife, mother,
homemaker, and gracious hostess was a high calling. Jean was never happier
than when she was surrounded by friends and neighbors, especially at holiday
time, with family all around. She also found time to serve for many years as
a Red Cross volunteer and as a volunteer at Montgomery Regional Hospital. A
woman of faith, Jean was a long-time member of Blacksburg United Methodist
Church. A loving daughter, devoted wife, and proud mother, grandmother and
great grandmother, she took keen delight in the accomplishments of her
family. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; and their son,
Thomas Howard Maher. The family would like to express its grateful
appreciation to all of the care givers in the Health Care Center of
Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, and to the staff of the Hospice of
the Piedmont. Memorial contributions may be made to the Frank J. Maher
Scholarship Fund, Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc., University Development
(MC0336), Blacksburg, Va. 24061. A memorial service will be held on Monday,
August 31, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111
Church St. The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 4 to 5:30
