Mrs. Lucy Holt Dyer died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. B. Hundley, Church Street, last Wednesday night, age 82 years.
The immediate cause of her death was a stroke of paralysis which she suffered several days ago, but for some months she had been visibly failing the increased feebleness of extreme age.
Mrs. Dyer, whose maiden name was Lucy Holt, daughter of the late Dred and Sallie P. (Mitchell) Holt, was born in Montgomery County, Va. where her parents then lived.
In her early girlhood they moved to Henry County and resided for many years on the "Scuffle Hill" place about 2 miles East of Martinsville.
Later her parents moved to Preston in this county.
On October 15th, 1859, she was married to James H. Dyer of Martinsville, whose death occurred about 38 years ago.
For some years he was proprietor of the old Hairston Hotel, then the leading hostelry in Martinsville.
The surviving children of this marriage are Mrs. W. H. Oakley of Figsboro, Va., Mrs. H. B. Hundley, John H. and Hugh Dyer of Martinsville, J. Ballard and [Dred] Holt Dyer of Winston, N.C., Ira Dyer of Indiana and Thomas H. Dyer of Cincinnati.
