He was born in Henry on March 12, 1911, to Isaac Newton Haynes and Lucy Jane Wells Haynes, both deceased. He retired from Bassett Furniture Industries and was a member of Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren. Surviving are his wife, Irene Haynes of Clermont; a son, John Lewis Haynes Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Virginia Dare Ward of Orlando; two sisters, Ella Law of Lynchburg and Ora Martin of Bassett; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Bassett Funeral Service from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren with Brother Harry Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Patrick County, Va., he was born the youngest son of the late William Barney and Allie Freeman Tudor. Mr. Tudor was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, trained at Great Lakes Illinois Training Station and trained first as a Naval Air Corps tail gunner and served later as an aviation storekeeper at Vernalis Air Station, Modesto, Calif. He was presented the base U.S. flag for serving out the duration of the war at the base upon its decommissioning in 1946. He was the retired owner of Leaksville Gulf Service Station in Eden, which he operated for 25 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elsie Clark Haynes on Oct. 3, 1991; a sister, Myrtle Smith; and six brothers, Jeff, Joseph, Frank, Lester, Roy and Nash Haynes. He was retired from Bassett Furniture Co. and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are two daughters, Alma Adams and Helen Feazell, both of Bassett; two sons, Norman and Ronnie Haynes, both of Bassett; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was born in Patrick County on October 14, 1920, to the late Walter Jackson Foley and Minnie Alice Massey Foley. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Haynes was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe Edward Haynes Sr.; six brothers, Kyle, Coolidge, Roy, Robert, Edgar and Eldee Foley; and three sisters, Ether Shough, Era Wade and Bertha Marshall. She had been a member of the New Hope Church of the Brethren for nearly 70 years, during which time she was a member of the Church Women's Fellowship and Ladies Aid Quilting Group and was a Children's Sunday School and VBS teacher. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fairystone Fire Department. Mrs. Haynes is survived by two daughters and sons in law, Betty and Jimmy Cannaday, of Floyd, Carolyn and Gaylon Moran, of King, N.C.; four sons and daughter in law, M. Edward "Pete" Jr. and Peggy Haynes, of Stuart, Walter and Marilyn Haynes, of Blacksburg, Ronnie Haynes and Anita Foley, of Stuart, and Kennie and Sandy Haynes, of Stuart; 11 grandchildren; 16 greatgrandchildren; and two sisters, Alphalene Adams, of Stuart, and Christine Blackard of Mayodan, N.C. Funeral services for Mrs. Haynes will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the New Hope Church of the Brethren with Pastor Rick Randall, the Rev. Mike Varner and Jack White officiating. Burial will follow in the Ross Harbour United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Haynes Sr., 97, of Morengo, Ohio, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at Bennington Glen Nursing Center in Morengo. He was born Dec. 31, 1911, in Martinsville to Luther E. and Eleanor Agee Haynes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Erma H. Minter, four brothers and one sister. Surviving are six children, Lowell Haynes of Martinsville, Russel Haynes of Brooklyn, Ohio, Vivian Mosher of Cardington, Ohio, Hamlin Taylor Haynes of North Carolina, Margaret Nagle of Morehead City, N.C., and John Haynes of Jamestown, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was held Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington with Pastor Charles Robinson officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery.
