Akers Bolen, 84, of Raleigh, died Friday, following a short illness. Born
Jan. 16, 1918, at Sophia, she was the daughter of the late Levi and Cora
Belle Blankenship Akers. Mrs. Bolen was a former manager of Aides Discount
and was of the Protestant faith. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Garnet Bolen. Surviving are a nephew, David Akers and his wife, Jerline of Whitwell, Tenn.; and six nieces, Phyllis Selfe of Christiansburg, Va., Sue Dickson of
Christiansburg, Va., Wanda Showalter of Floyd, Va., Ernestine Craighead of
Draper, Va., Betty Ann of California and Vanice of
Chicago, Ill. Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Park
Mausoleum B, Beckley, with the Rev. Ronnie Lilly officiating. Burial will

Caldwell Memorial Hospital. She was born May 1, 1917 in Raleigh County, West
Virginia to the late Sherman and Prascova Gray
Akers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Howard Young; one daughter, Drema Young; two sons,
Jackie Eugene Young and Bobbie Darrell Young; two brothers; three sisters;
and two grandsons. Mrs. Young was a homemaker and
was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include two sons,
Wayne Young and wife Viola and Keith Young and wife Rebecca, both of Lenoir;
daughter, Deanna Bowden of Granite Falls; daughter-in-law, Dixie Young of
Granite Falls; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held
Sunday, December 23, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Hot Coal Cemetery in Sophia, West
Virginia. The family will receive friends
Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Greer-McElveen

Obituaries - Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 Jewel Frances Romeo, 83, of
Sophia, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House
following a long illness. Born November 30, 1926, the
daughter of the late John Sherman and Pascua Akers of Sophia. She was a
lifelong resident of Sophia. Jewel's life was dedicated to
her family. Her life's work was to be a wonderful wife, mother and
grandmother. In her earlier years Jewel was a member of the Friendship
Baptist Church in Sophia which her father and many friends founded. Later in
life she joined and became a member of the St. Francis DeSales
Catholic Church to worship with her husband Tony. Those left to cherish her
memory are her husband of 63 years, Tony Romeo of Sophia, along with her two
children Jim Romeo and wife Penny of Kingsport, Tenn., and Debbie (Romeo)
Martin and husband Gene of Midway; also her sister, one of five siblings,
Thelma "Sissy" Young of Lenoir, N.C. She was the darling
grandmother of Chris Pullum of Bristol, Tenn., Justin Martin of Stamford,

great-grandmother to Luke Monti, Olivia and Sofie Herron. The family wishes to extend
