Dispatch June 11, 1946 Miss Dorothy Gaye
Smith, 21 of Floyd & Charles A. Yearout 26 yo of Christiansburg were fatally injured Sunday afternoon in
a motorcycle accident a mile west of Elliston in Montgomery County. Both died
in a Christiansburg hospital several hours after the accident. State Trooper
R. L. Chow said in a preliminary investigation that Miss Smith & Yearout in an attempt to pass a truck, struck the side of
an automobile driven by James M. Martin, 24 of Ironto.
Martin suffered minor injuries in the crash. |

1946 Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., VA. Father: Charles Yearout,
b. Floyd Co., VA. Mother: Lou Sweeney, b. Floyd Co., VA. Burial: Sunset
Cemetery, Christiansburg. Charles Edmound Yearout was killed
along with his girlfriend, Dorothy Gaye Smith, 21, of Floyd, after
crashing his motorcycle on Route 11 near Fotheringay.
Charles was drafted for World War II on 15 Apr 1942 and served the duration
and was discharged sometime after Sep 1945. So, Charles made it through the
entire war and occupation in Europe afterwards, only to lose his life in a
