Botetourt County Virginia - Tithable Districts and Tithable
Lists 2021 We have just completed an exhaustive study of the
Botetourt County Virginia tithables covering the
decade of the 1770s, a time of rapid population migration from and within the
English colonies following the 1763 collapse of the French colonial holdings
in North America. This project presents transcriptions and images of the
original documents for the court records defining the tithable districts,
accurate GIS-based maps of the district boundaries, as well as the tithable
lists themselves. While the COVID pandemic has interrupted our effort at
acquiring a complete set of images from the Botetourt courthouse, LDS scans
are readily available online, and were used for the transcriptions. All of
this information, along with all supporting source citations, is available
for the general public at the website, shown below. Tithable lists are extremely valuable tools for
tracing the movement of individuals and families during this time period, and
the geolocation of the tithable district boundaries provides a geographic
context for the individuals identified on these lists. This project has
compiled transcriptions of all of the names contained within the Botetourt
County tithable lists from 1770 through 1777 into a single, searchable
spreadsheet-based data set, and virtually eliminated the effect of spelling
variants by assigning a common spelling in a searchable name field. It has
also provided a geographic framework, using GIS-based map graphics, of the
tithable district boundaries. It is our hope that this mapping effort, by
making all data, maps and sources easily available in a web-based
application, renders this important historic data useful, useable and
relevant for family historians. Jim Jackson |

Births BOTETOURT COUNTY BIRTH REGISTER These are images from film. Each page has two images. The quality isn't great, but they are readable. The image is about 8 X 10, so it loads slowly on dial-up. I hope these will be useful to someone. Each line reads across both pages so you may need to print out page 1 & 1a to get the full picture. This is not a difficult file to use. Transcriptions are being done on these pages by Dianne Metz. We are greatful for all of Dianne's effort. Some of these images are hard to read so this effort will be most helpful. Thank you Dianne. I credit Volunteers for making these pages so informative. Dianne is only Transcribing page 1-2-3 etc. for now 1a - 2a - 3a etc., will be done at a later date and added. PLEASE check below I have added page 1 & 1a and a transcription for 1 not 1a. and so on. Check back often for more information, and be patient with me as web adm, and Dianne as transcriber or pitch in and help. |

In Memorandum In Memory of Geraldine Mangus Obenshain When
the Botetourt Genealogy Club was formed, we voted two members to be honorary
lifetime members for their interest in Genealogy. Geraldine was our oldest
member and probably had more genealogy research than the rest of us put
together. Geraldine was a very knowledgeable person about just about every
surname in colonial Botetourt. The
other lifetime member is Margarette Tynan. |
