Springdale, Washington County, Utah

Springdale was first settled in 1862 at the site of the springs near the north fork of the Virgin River just outside Zion National Park. By 1863 there were about twenty families living in the town. Many of the families left in the next year until there were only nine families  Because of Indian trouble the town was vacated by 1866 and it was 1875 before the town was back to its earlier population.

Early settlers included the Petty, Whitlock, Black, Millet and Morris families. The Averetts, Powels, Davises, Mortons, Crandalls, Palmers, Youngs, Greens, Turnbaughs, and Homers came soon after those first settlers.

The early settlers endured torrential rains, floods, Indian troubles, drought, and many privations. That any of these towns endured is a great testament to those early settlers and their families.

Today Springdale still has a few farmers but is better known for its tourist sites. There are a lot of visitors to Zion National Park each year and they all pass through and enjoy the town of Springdale. In the 2000 U.S. Census there were 457 people living there.
