Ghost Town:

Mountain Dell, Washington County, Utah

Mountain Dell was a small community about 5 miles up North Creek. A mill built was also built on North Creek by Joel Johnson about a mile and a half north of the town. This area was northeast of Virgin towards the Kolob plateau. Joel Johnson planted an orchard and vineyard at his sawmill site and fenced ground for his herds. The residents of Mountain Dell moved into the area in 1863-1864 but there was limited area for farming and flooding reduced their fertile ground every year. In 1866 there was just 58 acres under cultivation with wheat, corn, cane and cotton being grown. Joel Johnson had to leave his sawmill and sold out to William and Joseph Black. Joel Johnson later moved to Bellevue (Pintura) where he again established his orchards and vineyards and contributed greatly to the fruit industry in the county. The residents of Mountain Dell had to abandon their settlement because of Indian troubles in 1866 but some returned in 1869.
