Thomas Washington Smith was born 23 December 1815 in Smith County, Tennessee, son of James Agee Smith and Margaret Love.
He was baptized and confirmed a member of the LDS Church 6 January 1841 by Jadock Willson in Gibson Co., Tennessee, and two years later, in 1842, he moved with his parents to Nauvoo, Illinois where he resided until 1846 when he went as far west as Council Bluffs with Brigham Young and the first company of Saints. He remained until 1851 during which time he presided over the Boyat Branch.
In 13 May 1851 he started for Utah, arriving at Provo, September, 1852. On a day in November, 1854 he moved to Filmore, Utah.
In December, 1871, President Erastus Snow called him on a mission to settle Pahreah, a small section in Kane County, Utah. On November, 1877 he was ordained Bishop of the ward. This office he held until the ward was disorganized in 1886 because of destructive floods.
He was a faithful father, husband, and Latter-day Saint. He married four wives, had 21 children, 80 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 8 adopted children.
