Sheriff Jesse Tyler (c. 1857 – May 26, 1900) was a prominent Grand County, Utah lawman and road supervisor in the late 19th century. He was killed in the line of duty, along with Deputy Samuel F. Jenkins, after confronting outlaws—suspected to be part of the Wild Bunch—near Hill Creek.
Key Details in History:
Law Enforcement Role: Serving as a Grand County Sheriff/Deputy, Tyler was actively involved in patrolling against rustlers, including a 12-day, 1899 posse in the San Rafael country.
The Deadly Confrontation: On May 26, 1900, while searching for cattle thieves in the Book Cliffs, Tyler and his deputy approached a camp. The outlaws, believed to be led by Kid Curry (Harvey Logan), opened fire, killing both men.
Rustler Conflict: Prior to his death, Tyler had been actively pursuing the "Hole in the Wall Gang," having shot and killed "Flat Nose" George Curry in April 1900, which likely prompted the revenge killing by Kid Curry.
Legacy: Tyler was buried in the Grand Valley Cemetery in Moab, Utah. He was remembered for his dedicated, albeit brief, tenure in a dangerous, lawless era.
