This photo was taken in late 1942 when the townsite was still called Drager. It is the office of W.E. Ryberg Co. - Strong & Grant, the contractors for the Defense Plant Corporation who built the Dragerton houses and other buildings. Building is directly across the road from Menottis Carbon Grocery Co. After the houses were finished, the office building was jacked up and a basement was put underneath. A foyer was added, a steeple in the front and the building became "The Dragerton Community Church." Picture donated by Don Butler and originally belonged to his Aunt Beth Young Woodward. |

Smoke emanates from the Sunnyside Coke Ovens near the top of the picture. The easternmost portion of Dragerton, E-section, is just being built, only half filled with houses. Columbia is not included in the photo. Photo donated by Don Butler.

Smith Ranch in Argyle Canyon. Note from Patricia: Abraham Owen Smith, "my great grandfather dug wells out there in Nine Mile Canyon and it was the only place for freighters and travelers to water between Price and Fort Duchesne. I have great grandfather, Abraham Owen Smith's ledger where he recorded the names of individuals (some were Indian names!) who had charged 50 cents to water their teams of horses. We have been told that some of the entertainers of the early days coming from Boston to San Francisco also passed through there, stayed at Smith wells in their improvised "Inn" and ate the home cooked meals of my great grandmother, Malona (Draper) Smith."
