MILLIGAN/MILLICAN CHAPEL CEMETERY

This cemetery is on private property.  To find this cemetery, take Hwy 19 south from Trinity until you find FM 1617, turn right. Go about 1 mile after crossing Bell Creek, & immediately start looking to right to find the cemetery.  . Go about 1 mile crossing Bell Creek, and immediately start looking to right to find the cemetery.

Rumor has it that the name has been officially changed to Milligan Chapel Cemetery. To quote our 2d edition of Trinity County Cemeteries: According to Mr. & Mrs. Robert A. Turner, the name is spelled with a "C", and pronounced by East Texas with a "G". The First Methodist Church was called Millican (as pronounced by East Texans) Chapel.

Milligan Chapel Cemetery is made up of a number of adjoining fenced-in family plots: Brock, Turner, Stanford, and Leggett (Br, Tu, St & Le in the section column). The Sam McWilliams family plot is located somewhere behind the Turner plot, the exact location being unknown. Parents, aunts, and uncles of Mr. Sam McWilliams are buried here. Mr. & Mrs. Jack Stanford describe the Stanford plot as being behind the turner plot but without a fence. One grave possibly marked could be either a Stanford or a Turner. The other graves with markers, but no dates are for Isaac Stanford and his wife, Mary Lloyd Vaughn Stanford.

In the first edition, the French family cemetery was added to this cemetery as a separate listing. For the second edition, the French family cemetery names were merged with the Milligan names. We have separated these two cemeteries. The French family cemetery is now known as the French Memorial Cemetery, and actually down a different road from the Milligan Cemetery. Both cemeteries are located south of Trinity, Texas.

For the compiled  list, both Trinity County Cemeteries ©1980 and the second edition Trinity County Texas Cemeteries © 1992 both published by Trinity County Historical Commission (TCHC) were consulted.   This cemetery was surveyed by Virginia Buckle Arnold, Mary Mason Abshier on 17 April 2003. The back part was not surveyed due to poison ivy and heavy vegetation. Additions were found on October 6, 2004 by Chris Dyer, Ruth Tullos, Dee Dee King and Virginia Arnold.  In this newly found back section in front of the Stanford and McWilliams fenced part is a very old, approximately 6’ x 6’ fenced area, no stones found inside.
