HILL/LANE PRAIRIE CEMETERY

This cemetery is on private property.  This cemetery is reached from Glendale Community, TX turn north off State Jogjwau 94 at the Glendale Cemetery sign.  At the fork in the road turn right & go 4.8 milesto a pasture gate on right. Because of safety concerns, the landowner would be delighted to assist relatives of the deceased desiring to visit the cemetery. You may contact the landowners through Trinity County Historical Commission, P.O. Box 123, Groveton, TX 75845, if you have any corrections, questions or information to add to this listing.

New information has been received by Cemetery Committee indicating this cemetery was originally called Lane Prairie Cemetery. We were verbally told the land originally was owned by Dude Hill, hence the name it has been known for the first and second editions of Trinity County Cemeteries. Other local sources say Lane Prairie Cemetery. One of the e-mails explained the source of the name: "James M. Thornton bought that land in 1882 and sold it to his son-in-law George W. and Susan Thornton Hashaw. It was sold by George and Susan's children in 1949. My aunt who is the last of George and Susan's children lives in Mexia and she knows they are buried there, but when we visited her lately she could not remember a name for that cemetery... James M Thornton sold an acre of land off the corner to the Lane Prairie School in Jan. 1900 which is recorded in the land records at Trinity." We are researching whether we have two different cemeteries, or one with two names.

For the compiled list, both Trinity County Cemeteries ©1980 and the second edition Trinity County Texas Cemeteries © 1992 both published by Trinity County Historical Commission (TCHC) were consulted. Additional burial information was from James H. Thornton. Physically checked and updated on June 17, 2004 by VirginiaDeeDee” King and Virginia Buckle Arnold.
