This cemetery
is a genealogist gold mine for the several families! Mr. Gilbert Spring has
done a great deal of work to preserve this cemetery and to honor his ancestors.
He has replaced numerous old headstones with new ones, procured military
markers for those deserving men who served in various wars. Etched on the
stones are the names of children and grandchildren of these people, as a way of
recording for posterity, the genealogies of Benjamin Burke and Adeline Gandy
Odom Smith with her two husbands.
This Cemetery
was originally on the property of Benjamin Burke, Sr., who was the first one to
be interned in this cemetery. His grave display Citizen of the
"Dedicated
to the memory of Benjamin Burke, Sr., born in Kentucky AD 1793, Married January
19, 1829, came to Texas 1829, served as a volunteer in the War between Texas
and Mexico 1836-1837, Died May 4, 1863, age 70 years." "Susan Ogden Burke, born in Montgomery
County, North Carolina, October 21, 1808, died July 27, 1890, buried in Rising
Star, Texas, was the daughter of Benjamin Ogden and Susannah Moore Samuel
Burke, born circa 1800, married circa 1826, died 1828 and buried in Arkansas,
Susan's first husband" On the back
of the large headstone of Benjamin Burke, Sr., are the names of his ten
children, their children, and grandchildren.
