Memorial Services for Graham Swain, 73, of Brownfield, were at 11:00 a.m.,
Sat., Nov. 12, 2005, at Brownfield First Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Land
officiating. Burial was in Terry County Memorial Cemetery under the
direction
of Brownfield Funeral Home. He died Nov. 10, 2005, at his home
in Brownfield.
Graham was born in the Challis community on Nov. 10, 1932, to Bill and Rowena
Swain.
He attended schools in the Gomez community and Brownfield. He
graduated from
Brownfield High School in 1950 and then attended Texas Tech
University. He
served in the US Army as a sergeant from 1951 - 1953 during the Korean
War. He
married Ardeth Herring on January 4, 1958. She preceded him in death
on
April 21, 1988. He married Betty Carr on July 19, 1990.
He was a life long resident of Terry County where he was engaged in farming
Mr. Swain loved his family, church and community. He was a member of First
Baptist
Church where he served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and a member of
various
committees. He served on the Brownfield School Board from 1975 -
1981. He also
served on the Brownfield City Council from 1985 to 1989 and was mayor from 1992
to
1996. He was honored as Brownfield's Citizen of the Year in
1995. Mr. Swain was
also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Lubbock Scottish Rite.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Mike and wife, Darla, of Brownfield; a
daughter,
D'Ann Cadenhead and husband, Bart, of Amarillo; seven grandchildren: Hillary and
Joel Swain of Lubbock, Travis and Valerie Doshier of Nadogdoches, Katie
Cadenhead
of Canyon, Kezi Cadenhead of Amarillo, and Kodie Cadenhead of Arlington.
He is also
survived by three sisters, Estelle Clark of Lubbock, Billie Brian of San Antonio
and
Gladys Swain of Brownfield. He was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda
White.
Pallbearers will be Archie Dungan, Bill Swaringen, Bill McGowan, Jr., Bob Noble,
Max Grice, Jess Chidester, Dale Travis and Maurice Martin. Honorary
pallbearers
will be Odell Sears, Jake Geron and the Deacon body of First Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund of Brownfield.
