Mary Laverne Phillips, 84, of Brownfield will be at 3 p.m.,
Wednesday, Nov. 12, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jon Patrick
and Rev. Clarence Branch officiating. Burial will follow in Terry
County Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral
Home. Laverne went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, in Lubbock. She was born Jan. 12, 1924, in Haskell County to Rupert Earl and Clemma E. McNiel. She moved with her family to Terry County in 1927 and graduated from Union High School in 1940. Laverne married Troy "Pete" Hubert Phillips on April 29, 1944, in Clovis, N.M. She taught school in the 1940's and 1950's in Union and Gomez. Laverne was a strong Christian woman. For over 40 years she taught Sunday School and GA's along with serving as the secretary at Union Baptist Church. After retiring from farming in the Union community, she and her husband moved to Brownfield. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Lavern is preceded in death by a great-grandson. Pallbearers will be Bobby Faught, Dickie Faught, Kermit Shults, Ronnie Floyd, Thomas Cargill and Mike Swain. Laverne is survived by her husband, Troy "Pete" Phillips, of Brownfield; two daughters, Kay Givens and her husband Dennis of Midland and Ann Anderson and her husband Bill of Lockney; two sons, Tommy Phillips and his wife Dee of Seminole and Tony Phillips and his wife Madonna of Brownfield; a sister, Billie Faught of Brownfield; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
