Merritt, 72, of Brownfield passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at
his home in Brownfield. Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday,
Feb. 7 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ruby Moltrie
officiating and Rev. Don McWhorter assisting. Internment followed in
the Terry County Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield
Funeral Home. Alton was born on May 6, 1936, and raised by Claude Lee and Carrie Mae Merritt. He moved with his family to Brownfield in 1940 and graduated from Brownfield High School in 1954. On March 2, 1978, he married Earlene Rowan Elliott in Brownfield. Together they were members of The Terry Twirlers Square Dance Club and the Lubbock Area Square Dance Association as well as serving on the Meals on Wheels board where they delivered many meals. Alton was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he participated in the choir, hand bell choir, Methodist Men and Backyard missions. He is preceded in death by his twin sister Alta Lenning on July 18, 2008. Alton is survived by his wife Earlene Merritt of Brownfield; his son, Doug Elliott and his wife Kelley of Keller; two daughters, Renea Nave and her husband Chuck of Brownfield and Donna Hodges and her husband Ronnie of Brownfield; five grandchildren and one great grandson.
