Hudspeth, 83, of Brownfield, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010, in
Brownfield. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday,
May 26, at Brownfield Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. John
Fields officiating. Interment will follow at Terry County Memorial
Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home. Vona Lee O'Neal Hudspeth was born on November 29, 1926, in the Pleasant Valley Community in Terry County. She attended a one-room school in Pleasant Valley until she started high school at 12 years old. Vona Lee graduated from Brownfield High School at the age of 16 in 1943. She then attended Draughn's Business College in Lubbock. Upon graduating she took a job as a bookkeeper working many years for P.R. Cates. Vona Lee met the love of her life, George Allen Hudspeth, on Thanksgiving in 1945. They were married on February 24, 1946. She lived in Terry County and Brownfield her entire life, helping her husband farm. They had three children; John Allen, Linda Sue and Mary Lee. Vona Lee spent many years raising her family. She enjoyed china painting, sewing, knitting and gardening. She was an active member of Band Boosters from 1961-1979, a Brownie leader, room mother and Sunday school teacher. Upon retiring from farming, she loved traveling on trailway tours, sight-seeing throughout the United States. Vona Lee's family was the most important thing to her. She loved being "grandmommy." Vona Lee was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mary Ellen Wenzel and her daughter, Linda Hudspeth in 1994. Those left to mourn Vona Lee are: her husband, George Hudspeth of Brownfield; her son, John Hudspeth and his wife Crescent of Brownfield; Mary Lee and her husband Bobby of Hagerman, N.M.; four grandchildren, James Hudspeth and his wife Dee Dee of Dumas, Carole Hale and her husband Mike of Logan, N.M., Andrew Gunnels and his wife Kristin of Brownfield and Robby Gunnels of Longview; five great grandchildren, Evie Lou and Mikey Hale of Logan, and Austin, Audrey and Kadin Gunnels of Brownfield; her brother, Johnny O'Neal and his wife Kathi of Magnolia; two nephews, three nieces and numerous cousins.
