J. P. Hale was born to Ella and J. P. Hale on December 12, 1920, in Kent County, Texas. He was predeceased by his mother, father and sisters, Lena Johnson, Eva Hahn, Thelma East, and brothers, Ollie Hale and Floyd Hale.

He married Beulah Belle Gallagher on August 20, 1939, in Jayton, Texas. Beulah died July 6, 2000.

His life lives on in his son, Jim Pete Hale and his wife, Jan, of Waco, and daughter, Robbie Carlisle and husband Ralph of Ransom Canyon.

He loved his grandchildren, Chyra Haliburton of Waco, Krystal Haltom, Chad Carlisle and Chana Damron of Lubbock and Jeff Hale of McKinney. Great-grandchildren are Trenton Haltom of Norman, Okla., Cole Haltom of Lubbock, Taylor Haliburton of Brenham, Mabree Haliburton of Waco, Colt, Cade, Brooke, London and Cross Carlisle and Savanah Damron of Lubbock, arrett Hale of Bryan, Texas, Allison Hale and Parker Hale of McKinney.
 
Pete owned the Hale Variety Store in O'Donnell, and then farmed in Girard and Spur, before retiring to Brownfield.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 25, in the Terry County Memorial Cemetery with Mark McMillan of Fellowship Church in Ransom Canyon officiating. Burial was under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Jeff Hale, Chad Carlisle, Michael Damron, Kerry Haliburton, Trenton Haltom and Jarrett Hale.
