Graveside services for Charles Reed Barret, 93, of Shallowater will be at 10:30 am, Wednesday, April 9, at Terry County Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Charles Addington officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.

Charles passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008, at his home in Shallowater. He was born Feb. 24, 1915, in Brownfield to Jay and Viola Mae Barret, who were early settlers and pioneers in Terry County. He graduated from Brownfield High School.

He married Patsy Lee Key, December 12, 1939, in Hobbs, N.M. She preceded him in death April 21, 1999. They farmed west of Brownfield until 1957 when they moved to Lubbock.

Charles attended Draughon's Business College, graduating with a degree in accounting. They then moved in December of 1959, to the Dean Community where they operated a grocery store and gas station near Shallowater Citizens Co-Op Gin until retiring in January of 1980.

Charlie had a long, healthy and enjoyable life. He enjoyed annual trips to Las Vegas, fishing, going to movies, gardening, reading and spending time with his family. He will be fondly remembered.

He is also preceded in death by a daughter, Vi Barret on June 22, 1989, and his brother, Frank Barret of Las Vegas, and a sister, Grace Buchanan of Brownfield in June 2002.

Charles is survived by two daughters, Juana Jay Sires of Shallowater and Sharon Barret of Lubbock; a son-in-law, Terry Sires of Shallowater; two grandsons, David and Jay Van Story; two great-granddaughters, Denae and Denise Van Story.

The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Institute, 3601 4th Street, Lubbock, TX 79415.
