1, 1915 lists this obit: Mr. Manning Anderson, one of the old settlers of Rains County and a highly respected citizen of the Henrys Chapel neighborhood, died about 5:30 oclock Sunday afternoon. He was an ex-confederate soldier, a good citizen and neighbor, and had many friends and acquaintances throughout the county who will be grieved to learn of his death. His remains were interred in the Daugherty cemetery Tuesday, and the last tribute of respect paid by a large crowd of relatives and friends. The Leader offers sympathy and condolence to the bereaved family.

BISHOP, George W. (1832 - 1913) : Bishop Cemetery - Pvt., Co. D, 1st Georgia Cavalry, SCA military marker recently placed (Rains County Leader, 8 June 1999) He fought in the Civil War 1862 - winter 1864 when he was wounded in the head during Sherman's advance through Tennessee, according to the Texas State Archive; he had a steel plate in his head for the rest of his life. He joined the1st Georgia Cavalry, Co. D, in 1862. G.W. came to Texas after the War and settled on a farm in the Smyrna community. He & his wife Georgia founded a church and called it Smyrna Church for one of the 7 churches in Asia Minor. The Bishop family cemetery was established on the Bishop farm, located on FM Road 2324 about 0.9 mile west of Hwy.19 in a wooded area behind a residential home.

PORTER, Pinckney Columbus :(1849-1923) Born in Lauderdale County AlabamaBuried at Lynch Cemetery, Point, Rains County Texas. Union Civil War Headstone erected 09-12-2002 (yesterday !) November 25, 1863, at the age of 14, stating he was 18, Pinckney Columbus Porter crossed the Alabama State line, and rode horseback about 60 miles to Union City, Tn where he enlisted in Bradfords 14th Calvary Battalion, Co. B. This battalion calvary was raised by US Maj. W.F.Bradford, was also designated as the 13th calvary, and later consolidated with the TN 6th Calvary. In April 1864, at which time US Major William F. Bradford led his battalion against CSA General NathanBedford Forrest, my G-Grandfather, Pinckney Columbus Porter , a lad of only 14, was engaged in battle at the Battle of Fort Pillow, referred to as "The Fort Pillow Massacre", a CSA victory, and a great US loss. My ancestor survived this, and other battles, and returned to his home in Alabama, married, and migrated to Rains County Texas in 1877. Submitted by Nancy Young Carter
