Communist North Korea attacked South Korea on June 25, 1950. In the shadow of World War II, a force of the United Nations (from 22 countries) was led by the United States into the Asian peninsula. The original boundary between North and South Korea was re-established after 3 years of fighting. 1.5 million American men and women were a part of the "forgotten war". The message on the granite wall of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. states "Freedom is not Free". Names in italics indiate those with military markers; the birth and death dates listed on the marker and the Rains County cemetery in which the soldier is buried follow the name. Names with an asterik beside them are the latest updates.
