Frank Turner Dead
Uncle Frank Turner, colored, died suddenly at his home in Emory Thursday morning of last week with congestion. He was an ex-slave and his funeral was preached by Rev. John H. McLean of Greenville, who was his master by inheritance before the war. There were lasting bonds of affection between master and servant, and it was Uncle Frank's request that his former master should preach his funeral. Uncle Frank was about 60 years old and had the respect and good will of all who knew him.

Saul Jackson S.J. McMillan
1932 - 2004
Funeral services for Saul Jackson S.J. McMillan of Emory were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, at Emory Baptist Church with Rev. W.R. Byrd and Rev. Bobby Thomas officiating. Burial followed in Hopewell Cemetery. Pallbearers were Delenis Garrett and Howard Garrett. Mr. McMillan died Thursday, February 5, at Green Acres Nursing Home in Emory. He was born May 1, 1932, to Jewel and Callie Jackson McMillan in Emory. He was educated in Emory at the Sand Flat School. S.J. was a foreman for Harold Martin Construction for many years building roads and bridges and other types of construction. He had been in failing health for several years, growing weaker in the past several months. All the while, he was under the constant, watchful eye of his sisters, Mildred Garrett and Modene Lane. S. J. had made many, many friends over the years, many here in Emory as well as in other towns and states. S.J. talked of building bridges on roads where there needed to be connection as well as in human lives where there needed to be bridges made to create connection in our actions and in our hearts. S.J. leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Nietta Robinson Abney of Gainesville and Sheryl J. McMillan of Corsicana; sisters, Mildred Garrett and Modene Lane, both of Emory; granddaughter, Shatammia Abney of Dallas; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends; Bonnie McMillan of Corsicana and special friend Jimmy Neal Collins of California. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elbert Boots McMillan, A.C. McMillan, and P.W. McMillan; and three sisters, Deora Garrett, Loretta Williams, and Irene Robinson.
