Even though Allan's name is on the Matagorda County War Memorial, he never lived in Matagorda County. His family lived on Markham Street in Portland, Texas at the time of his death. His home of record was inadvertently listed as Markham, Texas in his military records. Matagorda County is proud to honor him and his sacrifice.
 

2 South Texans Killed in Vietnam

Two South Texans were reported killed in Vietnam by the Defense Department.

Killed in action were Army WO1 Allan E. Stahlstrom, 21, of Portland and Spec. 4 Alberto Vasquez Jr., 20, of Orange Grove.

Stahlstrom's parents are Marine Lt. Col. (ret) and Mrs. Harry A. Stahlstrom.

Stahlstrom's parents were notified yesterday that his status had been changed from missing to killed. They were notified that Stahlstrom was killed May 10 when his helicopter was hit by hostile small arms fire, crashed and burned.

Stahlstrom had been in Vietnam seven months and had served 20 months in the Army. A native of Cherry Point, N.C., he had lived in Portland six years.

He was a 1966 graduate of Gregory-Portland High School and had attended Del Mar College one year prior to entering the Army.

He underwent basic training at Ft. Polk, La., and flight training at Ft. Wolters, Texas and Ft. Rucker, Ala.

He is survived by his parents and a sister, Carol Ann.

Funeral arrangements for Stahlstrom will be announced by Pieper Funeral Home of Portland

PORTLAND -- The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Pieper Funeral Home Chapel here for Army WO1 Allan E. Stahlstrom, 21, of Portland.

Funeral Mass will be said at 3 p.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with burial in Prairie View Cemetery.

Stahlstrom was reported killed in Vietnam May 10 when his helicopter was hit by enemy fire, crashed and burned.

A native of Cherry Point N.C., he had been a Portland resident six years. He was a 1966 graduate of Gregory-Portland High School and had attended Del Mar College prior to entering the Army.

STAHLSTROM

PORTLAND - Lora G. Stahlstrom, 71, died Monday, January 13, 1992 in a Corpus Christi hospital.

She was born in Aransas Pass, Texas and has lived in Portland since 1964. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court of Angels #2181.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry A. Stahlstrom in 1986 and a son, Allan E. Stahlstrom in 1969.

Survivors are a daughter, Carol Stahlstrom of Corpus Christi; sister, Carrie Fay of Portland; nephew, James Martin Fay III of Portland; nieces, Virginia Green of Portland and Mary Margaret Fitzpatrick of Yoakum; grand nieces, Lisa Ann Scherlen of Yoakum and Carolyn Ann Pearse of San Antonio.

A Rosary will be recited 7:30 P. M. Tuesday, January 14, 1992 in the Maxwell P. Dunne Portland Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 A. M. Wednesday, January 15, 1992 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. John Vega as celebrant. Burial will follow in Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi, Texas.

In lieu of usual remembrances memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

STAHLSTROM

PORTLAND - Lt. Col. (Ret.) Harry A. Stahlstrom, 66, of Portland, died Wednesday following a sudden illness.

He was a native of Astoria, New York, and received his formal education in New York. He had been a resident of Portland since 1964 and was the owner and operator of J. K. Kalb Company, Inc. He served as a pilot with the United States Marine Corps during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War prior to retiring in 1964. He was a member of I. S. A. His son, Allan Stahlstrom, a helicopter pilot, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Lora G. Stahlstrom of Portland; a daughter, Carol Ann Stahlstrom of Corpus Christi; two nieces, Virginia Ann Green of Portland and Mary Margaret Fitzpatrick of Yoakum, Texas; a nephew, James M. Fay III of Portland; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Jim Fay of Portland; and two great nieces, Lisa and Carolyn.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Seaside Memorial Mausoleum Chapel. Interment with full military honors will follow.
