Matagorda County is on the coast
of Texas and was an original Texas
County. Matagorda is Spanish for
"thick brush" and was derived from
the dense canebrakes which grew in
the fertile prairie soil. The
Colorado River flows centrally north
to south with Caney Creek meandering
its way near the eastern border.
Caney was the lifeblood of the
Pre-Civil War plantations. The
first settlers battled the
Karankawas, mosquitoes and the
hurricanes.. Residents
of the county played integral roles
in the formation of the Republic of
Texas and the State of Texas. Visit
present-day Matagorda County to shop
