Centennial Marker Put on Court House Lawn

A red granite marker has been placed on the northwest corner of the court house lawn in Bay City by the Texas Centennial committee in commemoration of the early settlers of Matagorda County. On a bronze plaque is inscribed the following, in part: "Matagorda County early home of the Karankawa Indians. Landing place of La Salle in 1685. Settled 1822-36 by colonists of Stephen F. Austin. The municipality of Matagorda organized under the Mexican government on March 6, 1834." Other data of importance, names of signers of declaration of independence, first school teacher, newspaper, church and many early settlers.

When in Bay City stop and look it over, you will enjoy reading the history contained thereon and proud that such a marker has been placed in our county.
