Funeral services for Osborne Grice, 92, of Bay City, Texas will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 27, 2017 at New Hope Baptist Church in Bay City. Bay City Tribune, April 26, 2017 Osborne Potts Grice Osborne Potts Grice, one of nine children born to the union of Elder Grice and Maggie Henry Grice, was born on Saturday, May 15, 1924, in Wadsworth, Texas. Upon relocating to Bay City, Texas as a young boy, he shared his entire childhood with his siblings, other relatives and friends. Early in life, Osborne was married to Geraldine Parker, which to this union was born eight children; four sons and four daughters. He later enlisted in the U. S. Navy where he received an honorable discharge. Afterwards, he relocated to Los Angeles, California. There, he was united in marriage to Francis Brown. Osborne became an employee for the City of Los Angeles until he retired. He also was a member of of the V. F. W. Post #2134 where he once served as Post Commander. He remained in California until Francis went home to be with the Lord. In 1999, Osborne returned to Bay City, Texas, where he remarried Geraldine. They both became faithful members of New Hope Baptist Church. He proved to be a Christian even unto his demise on Thursday, April 13, 2017. Osborne lived to be a good-hearted person, who was a loving husband, father, brother, son, uncle and friend; but more importantly a great man of God who knew no strangers. He eventually became an ordained minister who truly loved the Lord with all his heart. He was kind and gentle in nature, and would do all within his power to help anyone. He truly will be missed by many. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elder and Maggie Grice, five children, and a granddaughter; also four sisters, Lucinda, Edith, Virginia and Sarah, and three brothers, Sam, O. D. and Frank. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Geraldine Grice of Bay City; two sons, Aaron Grice of Chino, California, and Albert Powell (Sandy) of Atlanta, Texas; two daughters, Janice Mullins (Carl) of Walnut, California and Loretta Sancho of Houston, Texas; one goddaughter, Verma Harris of Los Angeles, California; five sisters, Ora Lee Wright, Martha Jones, May Woods, Annabelle Grice and Rose Grice; one brother, Clarence aka Popcorn; also 9 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends who will cherish memories of him dear in their hearts.

Dennis
Griggs, Sr. On October 24, 1941 in Wadsworth, TX, Dennis Griggs Sr. was born to Ira and Nealie Griggs. He was baptized at an early age at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Waddy. He attended public school in Van Vleck, TX at O.H. Herman High, graduating in the Class of 1960. He met, fell in love, and married Anita Fay Griggs on December 24, 1962. God blessed this union with five beautiful children, during which time Dennis enlisted and served 4 years in the United States Air Force and upon being discharged, he continued his employment with the International Laborer’s Union as a Laborer and retired after 30 years of dutiful service. Dennis was a very active and committed member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for the last 76 years under the current leadership of Reverend Michael Riddick. He was ordained as a deacon in 1976 and served faithfully until he accepted his calling into the ministry. After which was appointed Minister of Education; making it his mission to ensure believers in Christ not only understood the true meaning of God’s word more in depth, but also how to apply the word to their daily lives. On June 8, 2018 the Lord called his angel home to live with him. Preceding him in death is wife of 50 years, Anita Fay Griggs; parents, Ira and Nealie Griggs; four brothers, Preston Griggs, Willie Griggs, Jimmy Griggs, and Albert Tone; and one sister, Alice Griggs. Family members left to cherish his beloved memories include three sons, David Powell, Sr. (Joyce) of Houston, Texas, Dennis Griggs, Jr. of Houston, Texas, and Taurus Monroe, Sr. of Kyle, Texas; two daughters, Maryetta Jammer (Walter) of Brazoria, Texas and Arlena Griggs of Bay City, Texas and four grandchildren he raised as his own, Horatio Griggs (Tangela) of Houston, Texas, Shalanda Johnson of Katy, Texas, Demetria Jammer (Shaun), and Quanita Dickson of Cedar Lane, Texas; two sisters, Mary Jane Griggs of Galveston, Texas and Louise Griggs Johnson of LaMarque, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Louisiana Times of Live Oak, Texas and Verna Griggs of Houston, Texas; Also joining the aforementioned are seventeen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; Godchildren, Anita Austin, Dominique Royster, Debra Franklin, Kristen Burnett, LaQuita Burnett, Joel Scott; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, family, and friends. Funeral services for Pastor Murry Griggs, Sr., 76, of Cedar Lane, will be at 11 a. m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at the First Baptist Church, Brazoria, Texas, with the Pastor Larry Griggs, presiding, and Pastor Kenneth Bree, eulogist. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane. Visitation will be from 3 – 6 p. m. Friday at the funeral home chapel, and memorial services from 7 until 9 p. m. at First Berean Baptist Church in Cedar Lane. He was born in Gainesmore, Texas, June 1, 1929, to Ellis Griggs and Gertrude Tellison Griggs, and passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, in Houston, Texas. He pastored the First Berean Baptist Church for almost 20 years, and was very active in community and civic affairs. Among his religious affiliations include the Lincoln Southern District Association of Texas, and the Gulf Coast Ministerial Alliance. Survivors include: his wife, of almost 58 years, Ophelia Fields Griggs of Cedar Lane; four children, Murray Griggs, Jr. and Charlene of West Columbia, Gloria Sidney and Buster of Missouri City, Gwendolyn Syers and Aaron of Fresno and Pastor Rodney Griggs, Sr. and Helen of Cedar Lane; one sister, Ruby Matthews and Sam of Bay City; three brothers, Elder Eugene Griggs and Ruby of Sweeny, Ellis Griggs, Jr. and Catherine of Bailey’s Prairie, and Robert Griggs and Tweety of Houston. Also, several grand and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, an enormous amount of other relatives and many wonderful friends, including First Berean Baptist Church. Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, Bay City, Texas.

Funeral services for Bertha Jones Hawkins, 83, of Houston will be held 1 p. m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church, Bay City, with the Rev. L. C. Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery, Cedar Lane. Friends and relatives may call until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home and from noon to 1 p. m. at the church. Mrs. Hawkins was born Sept. 10, 1906, in Matagorda County, Texas, to Isaiah and Nellie Campbell Jones and died Oct. 10, 1989, at her residence. She received her bachelor of science degree and master’s degree from Texas Southern University with extended studies at the University of Houston. She taught school in Matagorda, Wharton and Brazoria counties, retiring from Abel Elementary School in Wharton County. She was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include two daughters, Ruby Lee McGruder and Zelma Taylor-Brooks of Houston; a sister, Ruth Hunt of El Campo; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nine foster children; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Pallbearers include Rayfield Partain, Cleotis Brooks, George Smith, Bertrand Taylor, James Rice, David Taylor, Milford McGruder and J. W. Brown. Honorary pallbearers include Jimmie Fields, Archie Fields Jr., Hallard Fields, Herman Fields, Gilbert Jones and deacons of Bethel Baptist Church. Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, Bay City.
