INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE MEET OF MATAGORDA CO.

Following is a complete report of the Matagorda County Interscholastic League which was held in Bay City April 6 and 7. The report is furnished the Tribune by Prof. Ralph Newsome, of Blessing. It follows:

The above is a correct and complete report of the meet, as turned in by the various directors of the Matagorda County Interscholastic League.

According to this report the total score for the different schools, in the athletic events, is as follows:
 

Bay City, 103 1/2; Palacios 80; Blessing, 43; Gulf, 20 1/2; Markham, 5; and Van Vleck 2. There is a loving cup offered for the school winning the greatest number of points in the athletic events. This is the second year that Bay City has won the cup. If they should win it again next year it will become the permanent property of the Bay City school.

The meet could very well be called a success, however it was not the success that it should have been. The schools in Matagorda County have never realized fully just what can be accomplished through the Interscholastic League work. The chief aim of this work is to foster in the schools of Texas the study and practice of public speaking as an aid in the preparation for citizenship. It is also doing a great work in organizing, standardizing, and controlling athletics in the schools of the State. This League is the most highly organized and has the largest membership of any similar organization in the United States. Since its organization, in 1910, It has grown by leaps and bounds, until now it embraces almost five thousand schools.

For the first year the League's activities were confined to the debates among the high schools affiliated with the University. The following year contests in declamation were added and membership in the League was thrown open to all the schools of the State, below college rank. Subsequently there were also added contests in spelling, essay writing, athletics, and music memory.

If the League work is live and accomplishes its purpose in Matagorda County, there must be a revival of interest in it. There were more than four hundred entries made in the various contests but this is less than half of what there should have been. It is hoped that next year there will be some very necessary changes made in this work for this county, and that these changes will aid in arousing and stimulating an interest in the work, for the schools of the county.
