Services will be held for Guy Reed Townsend, 63, of Bay City, 4 pm Tuesday at First Baptist Church.

Officiating at the services will be Rev. W. D. Baker.

Townsend died November 28, 1982 at his residence.

Survivors include wife, Sarah Elaine Ray Townsend of Bay City; daughters, Mrs. Roxie Fatheree of San Antonio, Mrs. Kristy Keating of Beeville; grandson, William Townsend Keating of Beeville; numerous nieces and nephews. Townsend was a member of First Baptist Church.  He was a veteran of WWII in the US Navy serving in the Pacific and also veteran of the Korean War.  Townsend was also past president of Bay City High School Booster Club, active in the Little League and a retired supervisor with Phillips Ret. Co. A lifelong resident of Matagorda Count. Townsend has been a resident of Bay City for the past 3 years. Burial will follow services at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Pallbearers include: Sonny Cox, Dick Suffling, Six Augsberger, Jim Powers, Pete Harang, R. E. Roecker, Eddie Holloway and Willie Hill.

Sarah Elaine Ray Townsend

Sarah Elaine Ray Townsend died on Wednesday, February 14, 2001 in San Antonio.  She was born in Center TX on January 27, 1921. Elaine married Guy Reed Townsend in 1947. They were married until Guy's death in 1982. Elaine graduated from Center High School in 1938 and from TWU in 1942.  She earned a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Houston. Elaine taught school in Markham, Van Vleck, and Bay City schools for 36 years. She was a founding member of Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Elaine also served in WAVES from 1943 to 1946. During that time, she helped establish the Cook’s and Baker’s School at Hunter College in New York City. Elaine was member at First Baptist Bay City for many years, First Baptist Conroe and Churchhill Baptist, San Antonio.

She is survived by: two daughters, their husbands, and three grandsons, Roxie and Bill Fatheree and Reed Fatheree of San Antonio, and Kristi and Bill Keating of Arlington, Texas; two sisters, Ruth Ray of Conroe and Nell Ray of Huntsville.

The family would like to thank Dr. Melissa Isbell, Dr. J. Nathaniel Sanderson, and the staff of Independence Hill Assisted Living for their loving care.

Services will be Friday at 11 am at Porter Loring North Chapel.  Interment will follow in Van Vleck, in Roselawn Memorial Park on Saturday, February 17, 2000 at 2 pm under the direction of Taylor Brothers Mortuary.

Funeral services for Margaret McPeak Walker of El Paso will be held at 10 am Jan 28 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Charles Sonnier officiating.  Rosary will be said at 7:30 pm Friday at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, and burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mrs. Walker, 90, was born Oct 10, 1893, in Arcola, Miss., and died Jan. 25, 1984, in El Paso Nursing Home.  She lived in Bay City from 1920 to 1974.  Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Walker, in 1962.

She is survived by a daughter, Mildred Sandusky of El Paso, and a sister, Blanche McPeak of Corpus Christi.

Pallbearers will be Sam and Lawrence Hagaman, Joe Donley, Harlan Starnes, Gene Sandusky and Bill McPeak.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Bobby Allen, 44, of Bay City died June 23, 2002 at Citizen Medical Center in Victoria. He was born September 23, 1957 in Bay City to the late Floyd King and Alma Ailene Ashcraft Allen. Allen was a lifelong resident of Bay City.

Survivors include: sisters, Glenda Shelton of Kentucky, Billie Jean Krobot and Marie Bertolino both of Sugar Land, Susan deShazo of Houston, and Kay Mitchell of Louisiana; brothers, Larry Allen of Bay City, Frank Allen of Dallas, and James Allen of Houston.

Funeral service will be 10 a. m. Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Rodriquez officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Linda T. Basquez, 68, of Bay City died December 31, 2003 at the Methodist Hospital in Houston. She was born December 2, 1935 in Edna, Texas to the late Frank and Victoria Martinez Trevino.

Mrs. Basquez was a resident of Bay City the past 38 years and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Survivors include: husband, Manuel Basquez of Bay City; daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia Garza and Robert Gutierrez of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Stella Basquez of Bay City; sisters, Josie Falcon of San Antonio and Otilia Vasquez of Edna; brother, Raymond Trevino of Edna; four grandchildren, Melody Garza and Natalie Garza, Brittany Basquez and Christy Basquez all of Bay City; and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sisters: Lucy Trevino and Janie Ballin; brothers, Ben, Joe and Ruben Trevino; and brother-in-law, Manuel Falcon

The rosary was 7 p.m. Friday January 2, 2004, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. The funeral mass was 2 p.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Dale Eugene Bradford

Dale Eugene Bradford, 72, of Old Ocean, died September 5, 2002, at St Luke’s Hospital in Houston. He was born May 4, 1930 in Enid, OK, to the late Samuel N. and Monnie McCaland Bradford. He had been a resident of Matagorda County since 1976.

He was a 1953 graduate of Oklahoma A&M, where he received a chemical engineering degree, and served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.

He was a retired processing chemical engineer with Phillips Petroleum Co., with some 33 years of service. He attended Harvest Time Church. He also was an avid pilot for the past 48 years and also a motorcyclist.

Survivors include: three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Kay and Charles Hughes, Glenda May and Paul Juneau, all of Orangefield, TX, and Mona Marie Bradford of Stuttgart, Germany; three sons, Ronald Dale Bradford of Bay City, Lynn Alan Bradford of Port Neches, and Darrell Eugene Bradford of Orangefield, TX; fiancée, Helen Hipp of West Columbia; sister, Betty Bergman of Pryor, OK, four grandchildren, Cynthia Sturgeon and husband Cejay, Debbie Hughes, Mark Janeau and Taylor Bradford; and one great-granddaughter, Jeannie Marie Hughes.

Funeral service will be a 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2002, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Beverly Kay Claybourn
(March 2, 1951 - November 1, 2012)

Beverly Kay Claybourn, 61, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, and friend passed from this life into the next, peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 1, 2012 at her home in Bay City. She was born in San Antonio on March 2, 1951 to parents Dorothy Barina Young and Spergeon Whitfield “Spud” Shearer.

Beverly was an accomplished athlete who set records and won numerous awards while competitively swimming in the Gulf Coast Aquatic Association. She was a certified Red Cross lifeguard and water safety instructor, as well as an adult handicapped swimming teacher. She was elected as a cheerleader at Bay City Junior High School while still attending Holy Cross Catholic School in the eight grade. She was UIL state diving champion when she was 14. The softball team she played second base for, the “Sparks”, won the national championship in the 60’s. Her photograph made the cover of Cover Girl magazine when she was 16. She was Sophomore Sweetheart in high school. She went to school in Mexico and became fluent in Spanish.

She hosted several players from a team from Arkansas’ at her home when Bay City hosted a Babe Ruth League regional tournament in the mid 80’s. She was a constant fixture in the concession stand at the Bay City High School baseball field for both high school and Babe Ruth baseball. She and her husband sponsored an adult Co-Ed softball team, The Odd Couples, in the Bay City Parks and Recreation League. Bev and Jody also took numerous long vacations driving and saw many sights around the country. The first of these vacations they went to Graceland, the home of her favorite entertainer, Elvis. She greatly enjoyed country dancing with her husband and friends. She volunteered with the Women’s Crisis Center. She supported paralyzed veterans and American Indian Charities. She loved to work in the yard tending her plants, trees, and roses. She most of all loved to get together with family at anytime although the holidays were special, and was well-known for always remembering everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries. She was loved by everyone who knew her, and will be greatly missed.

Beverly is survived by her husband of 29 years: Jon (Jody) Norfleet Claybourn Jr.; sons: Noble DeMark Blythe Jr. and daughter Madison, Justin Wade Blythe and children Tristin and Jordan; her mother: Dorothy; sisters: Cecelia Studdard and children Katey and daughter Kerington and Kasey and Nancy Daniel and husband Greg and children Gregory and Leslie; and brother: Lee McKinney. She was preceded in death by her father: Spergeon Whitfield Shearer, sister: Shirley Kay Shearer, and 2 brothers: Spergeon and Whitfield Shearer.

The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Sunday, November 4, 2012 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Monday, November 5, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with John Huss Shearer officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Shannon Rae Combs, 30 of Bay City, passed away Friday, July 21, 2006 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

She was born August 29, 1975 in Houston, Texas. She has been a resident of Bay City for the past three years and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City.

She is survived by: her husband, Paul E. Combs, Jr. ; daughter, Jalynn Combs; and son, Jayden Combs, all of Houston; parents, Lewis F. and Mary Anne Zbranek Smith of Bay City; and by her paternal grandmother, Mable Smith of Bay City.

The Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at the Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, Texas.

Virginia Irene Crowe

Virginia Irene Crowe, 48, or Bay City won her courageous battle with cancer on Friday, June 15, 2001 when the Lord Jesus Christ called her home. She was born February 22, 1953, in Winfield, Kansas, to the late Harry Wayne Snell and Elsie Fogler. Virginia is survived by her husband, Rev. Tom Crowe of Bay City and her mother, Elsie Snell of Winfield, Kansas.

Virginia was a loving, kind, and giving person who always considered others. She enjoyed sewing, traveling, reading and working as a loving minister's wife in the follow parishes: Tomball, Nacogdoches, Port Arthur, Longview, Houston and Bay City. She was a member of the Eastern Star and loved singing in the church choirs and playing bells. Virginia was a computer programmer with Region IV Education Service Center in Houston. She was honored to serve as President of the Ministers' Spouses Association for the Longview and Houston Northwest Districts of Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church, Bay City, with Rev. O. Biser, the Rev. Robert Luton, and Dr. Bob Hayes, Jr. officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, TX. BAY CITY - Mary Jane Emery, 79, of Bay City, died Sunday, July 13, 2003.

She was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Lee County, Ky., to the late Elisha and Emily Spencer Morris. She was a retired machine operator for MacMillian Blodell Factory in Ohio. She was a member of First Christian Church in Bay City.

Survivors: daughters, Carlotta Adkins of Cincinnati and Victoria Aldridge of Bay City; sons, Larry Gabbard of Mason, Ohio and Keith M. Emery of Amelia, Ohio; sister, Dessie McDonald of Lexington, Ky.; brother, Arch Morris of Morrow, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, James Robert Emery; and daughter, Phyllis Jean Gabbard.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, the Elder Arden Aldridge officiating.

Gilberto Gazca, 68, of Bay City passed away very peacefully December 5, 2024.  He was born December 19, 1955 in Mexico to the late Aristeo Gazca and Nicanora Bernal Gazca.

Gilbert retired after many years as a Cemetery Caretaker for Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.  He was a man of integrity and loved spending time with his family.  He will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Virginia Gazca; daughter Sophia Gazca, brothers Jesus Gazca and Juan Gazca, brother-in-law Mario Lizcano, Sr. 

Survivors include siblings Isabel Lizcano, Jose Angel Gazca (Nancy), Luis Gazca (Irene), Alicia Lizcano (Ramiro), Felipe Gazca, Maria Elena Garcia (Hugo), Rebecca Lopez (Rene) and Elizabeth Gazca; sister-in-law Celia Gazca; daughters Sabrina Aguilar, Sonia Johnson (Joe), Shirley Caldera (Joe) and other extended family members gained by his marriage to his loving wife, Virginia; grandchildren Virgil Gazca, Khelyn Mitchell, Jack Johnson, Romeo Rangel (Mariana), Brooklyn Nelson and D’Angelo Nelson; great grandchildren Romeo, Ricco, Royal and Benito whom he adored and numerous other grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved so much.

Gazca died Sept. 23 at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. She was born Feb. 9, 1938 in Vander Ville, TX to the late Benito and Pauline Delgado Hernandez. She was a member of The Rhema Fellowship Church and a resident of Bay City for the past 12 years.

Gazca is survived by husband, Gilbert Gazca of Bay City; daughters, Dora Reyes of Wharton, Pauline Flores of Brazoria, Shirley Caldera of West Columbia, Sophia Ann Gazca of Bay City, and Stella Alameda of Bay City; sons, Domingo Aguilar, Jr. of Apple Valley, Calf., Lewis Benito, Sammy and Ismael Aguilar all of Bay City; sisters, Donna Perales and Lorinna Perales both of Bay City, Frances Sosa of Corpus Christi, Sara Silva of Madison, Wis., and Tite Sosa of Bunkie, La.; brothers, Benito Hernandez of Markham, Robert Zepeda of Bay City, Usaias Zepeda of Huntsville, Jimmy Perales of Pearland, and Able Perales of Markham; 29 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral services for Charles Harlan, 62, of El Maton were to be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at First Baptist Church in Van Vleck with the Rev. Joe Ramsey officiating. Interment was to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Mr. Harlan died at his residence Feb.12, 2000. He was born Nov. 5, 1937 in Encinal, Texas to Charles Augustus and Ewell Irene Parker Harlan.

Mr. Harlan was a member of First Baptist Church of Van Veck, a resident of the El Maton area the past 16 years and a former resident fo Bay City. He was the owner/operator of Truck and Auto in Van Vleck.

Survivors include: wife, Jackie Cobb Harlan of El Maton; mother, Irene Harlan of Baytown; two daughters and son-in-law, Lanna Louree and Rickey Doggett and Leesa Lanay Harlan all of Baytown; son and daughter-in-law, Brett Ewell and Sandra Harlan of Baytown; brother, Jerry Harlan and wife Regina of Nashville, Tenn; and seven grandchildren, Misty Hurley and Zachary Hurley both of Van Vleck, Jacob Adcock of Round Rock, Texas, Taryn and Tanner Doggett and Britney and Kassee Harlan all of Baytown.

He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Sylvia Faye Ludtke.

Vernon Louis Henkes

Vernon Louis Henkes, 42, of Buckeye, Texas died March 1, 2002 in a truck accident. He was born August 21, 1959 in Bay City to James Henkes, Sr. and Edith Vernon Henkes. A life long resident of Matagorda Co., and a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Vernon was a self-employed farmer who raised rice, cotton, milo, and soybeans in Matagorda County. He loved farming and was a true steward to the land. He was named "Outstanding Conservation Farmer of the Year" by the Matagorda County Soil and Water Conservation District. Vernon was active with the Matagorda County Farm Bureau and also the Matagorda County Farmers Co-Op. He was also an avid deer hunter, and enjoyed hunting with his friends in Central Texas each year.

All who knew Vernon were blessed by his presence. He never met a stranger. Vernon will be truly missed by all that knew him.

Survivors include: his wife of 17 years, Donna Nelsen Henkes; daughters, Jenna Nicole and Courtney Lynn Henkes all of Buckeye; parents, James L. Henkes, Sr. and Edith Henkes; brothers, Danny, Louis, and Richard Henkes and his wife, Stephanie; maternal grandmother, Etta Vernon and paternal grandmother, Annie Henkes.

Funeral service was at 2 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bay City, with the Rev. Eric Klimpel officiating. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Jean Ann McCurdy, 77, of Bay City, passed away May 6, 2005 at Bay Villa Nursing Home.

She was born September 13, 1927, in New York to John Schlitt and Anna Ranke Schlitt.

She moved to Van Vleck in 1990 and had lived in Bay City for the last year and a half.

She is survived by: two daughters, Carol Craig and husband, Patrick, of Van Vleck, and Christine Banik and husband, Jeff, of Roanoke, Virginia; a son, Richard McCurdy and wife, Sandy, of Rockaway, New Jersey; a sister, Lillian Rosol of Sterling, New Jersey; a brother, John Schlitt of Morris Plains, New Jersey; by seven grandchildren, Timothy Pulliam, Daniel Craig, Mark, Michael and Amanda McCurdy, and Eric and Amy Nichols; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Internment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers include Patrick Craig, Timothy Pulliam, Danny Craig, Michael Craig, Larry Spicer and Richard McCurdy.

Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.
