JoAnn Dayton Roots
May 15, 1939 - May 24, 2023

JoAnn Roots, (Maw Maw) born May 15, 1939, went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 24, 2023. She was the second daughter to the late Fred and Altah Dayton of McAllen, Texas, where she spent all her young life until meeting her late husband of 31 years, Donald Roots. They enjoyed raising their family together until his passing in 1997.

JoAnn held a position of Administrative Secretary for a local company for 22 years and upon her retirement, she began volunteering her time to the Nichols Street Church of Christ, of which she was a lifelong member. She felt blessed to serve the Lord in any way possible and was a devout Christian all her life.

She had many interests outside of work and her volunteer time, which included caring for her grandchildren during their younger years, gardening and manicuring her lawn, as well as spending loving times with her family throughout the years. It was without a doubt a “wonderful life” in her own words. And through it all, she still managed to spend time with her friends and acquaintances.

JoAnn is preceded in death by her parents Fred and Altah Dayton, husband Donald Roots, and her loving daughter Christy Spence. She is survived by sons Stephen (Danette) Roots and Don (Catherine) Roots; daughter Sherree Powel; sister Phyllis Weatherford; granddaughters Krysten (Bobby) Carrier, Alexa (Adam) Shank, Daphne (Tim) Petrich, Ashley (Jeff) Wagnon and Remy Roots; grandsons Nick (Kayla) Roots, Raleigh and Rhett Roots, and great grandchildren Cameron, Raidyn, Brielle, Brooklyn, Blaire and John.

Our gratitude goes out to the staff and nurses at Woodlake Nursing Facility for their care of JoAnn over the last few years, as well as AMED/Choice Hospice nurse Sara for her compassion for JoAnn in her final days.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 am Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at Nichols St. Church of Christ. Service will begin at 10:00am with Matt Springfield officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
